What is the "Zhou Dongyu arrangement" for Huawei P40 screen? The winner of the Golden Horse Award asked questions in person.

Huawei released P40 series mobile phones on March 26th. Soon after, the word "Arranged by Zhou Dongyu" once again attracted people's attention. In fact, last August, Zhou Dongyu, winner of the Golden Horse Award, raised this question at the Zhihu, which made people laugh and cry.

"Zhou Dongyu arrangement" is actually the so-called "triangular pentagonal arrangement", also known as "RGB-Delta arrangement", which is generally used on the OLED screens of screen manufacturers such as BOE. Because its green pixel is split in two, it looks like a duck with green eyes and a big mouth, and it was finally linked with Zhou Dongyu by netizens.

Why use such a complicated pixel arrangement? This should start with the organic light-emitting diode screen and LCD screen. The LCD screen emits background light through backlight, and displays different colors through polarizer, alignment film, filter and other structures. After zooming in, you can see that red, green and blue pixels are evenly arranged on the LCD screen, which can be combined into various colors on the screen.

Compared with LCD screen, the biggest feature of OLED screen is that each pixel is self-luminous, so there is no need for backlight layer and liquid crystal layer. In this way, the structure of the screen is greatly simplified and the screen can be made thinner. At the same time, the screen contrast, viewing angle and maximum brightness are better than the traditional screen, so the organic light-emitting diode screen is gradually becoming the first choice for mid-to high-end mobile phone screens.

Although organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen is favored by manufacturers more and more because of its many advantages, it still has a fatal disadvantage: although each pixel is self-luminous, the luminous efficiency of blue pixels is low, and under the same pixel size, blue pixels need more current to achieve the same brightness, which makes their life span significantly shorter. When the blue pixel is damaged, the screen will turn yellow and color cast, and the phenomenon of "screen burning" will appear, which is especially common in the earliest ordinary RGB-arranged organic light-emitting diode screens.

Manufacturers solve this problem from the perspective of hardware and software. In hardware, they mainly adopt non-standard arrangement, and make blue pixels bigger or more to prolong their service life. The pentagonal arrangement increases the pixel size. Although this solution alleviates the problem of pixel lifetime, under the same size and resolution, the pixels per inch of the screen will decrease because of the increase of pixel size. In order to make up for the lower resolution, Samsung took the lead in introducing the "diamond arrangement", but despite this, the actual resolution of this arrangement is obviously lower than the standard RGB, so various manufacturers are still improving the resolution of the screen.

Since Samsung has applied for the patents of "Pentile Arrangement" and "Diamond Arrangement", other manufacturers have to design different screen pixel arrangements, such as "Delta Arrangement" and "RGB-Delta Arrangement". Although the specific arrangement is different, they are essentially extended blue-red pixels. However, the display effect of these arrangements is not as good as that of diamond arrangement, which may lead to weak font edges or colored edges, and even make the whole picture more grainy and produce grid lines.

At present, both Samsung's diamond arrangement and BOE's RGB-Delta arrangement are actually compromises that have to be made to solve the problem of screen burning. With the gradual development of the screen, if the life of blue pixels can be solved by MicroLED technology, there may not be any strange arrangement. Nevertheless, the quality of a screen can not be measured only by the arrangement of pixels, but also by factors such as screen resolution, brightness and dimming mode. For consumers, it is best to get started or do their homework when buying an OLED screen mobile phone. For those users who are sensitive to PWM stroboscopic, LCD screen may also be a good choice. After all, "LCD will never be a slave."
