The main task is to investigate criminal cases, such as theft, murder, fraud and kidnapping.

In People's Republic of China (PRC), the national criminal police are subordinate to the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China, provincial (autonomous) public security bureaus, prefecture-level city (autonomous prefecture) public security bureaus (regional public security bureaus) and county (county-level city, flag) public security bureaus (municipal public security bureaus).
