How to read case references

When reading cases in the common law system, you will encounter a string of characters, the case reference is the number of a previous case in the court used in common law countries.

For example, 93 NJ 324, 461a. 2d 138 (1983).

Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. Supreme Court, 113 (1973)

Marbury v. Madison, U.S. Supreme Court Reports, Vol. 5, Nos. 137, 21 Edition, page 60 (1803)

What do these numbers mean?

93 North J 324, 461A. 2D 138 (1983) states that the case was decided in 65438 from the New Jersey Collection, vol. 93, page 324, and the Atlantic Collection, vol. 461, vol. 2, page 138.

Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973) states that "Roe v. Wade" comes from U.S. Report 410, starting at page 113.

Marbury v. Madison 5 U.S. 137, 21 ed.60 (1803) stands for "Marbury v. Madison" and is included in the 5-volume Report of the United States, starting page: 137, also included in the Supreme Court Report (Lawyers
