During the Tang and Song Dynasties, Foshan’s handicraft industry and commerce , culture flourishes. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it developed into an important town in Lingnan where merchants gathered and industry and commerce developed. Together with Beijing, Hankou, and Suzhou, it was known as the "Four Gatherings of the World", and it was also known as the Four Greatest Towns in China with Hankou Town in Hubei, Jingdezhen in Jiangxi, and Zhuxian Town in Henan.
