Article 254 of the Criminal Procedure Law of People's Republic of China (PRC) clearly stipulates that a criminal sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment or criminal detention may be temporarily executed outside prison under any of the following circumstances:
1. The criminal is seriously ill and needs to be released on parole for medical treatment.
2. Criminals are pregnant or breast-feeding their babies. The lactation period is calculated according to 1 year after the baby is born.

3. Criminals can't take care of themselves, so the application of temporary execution outside prison will not harm society.
A criminal sentenced to life imprisonment may be temporarily executed outside prison under the circumstances specified in the second paragraph of the preceding paragraph.
