Xiao Zhao from Fujiaba Village, Jingfu Town, Santai County, Mianyang City, did not expect that one of his climbs would break someone else’s big secret
October 2019 At about 14:00 on the afternoon of the 30th, Xiao Zhao took advantage of the opportunity to climb the top of a mountain in his hometown to play. He found that there were bird nets on the top of the mountain, and a man in his sixties (with a foreign accent) was catching birds from the net. Xiao Zhao immediately called the police.
After the police arrived at the scene, they found that the bird-catching net set up at the scene was like a Bagua array, with several layers of bird-catching nets set up in a ring shape from the inside to the outside. In the center of the scene, the police could only move and cut while walking normally on the hillside. A large number of captured birds were piled in the densely woven bird nets, as well as more than 50 bird nets and 2 traps that played simulated bird calls.
The police stopped the 60-year-old man Shi (male, Guizhou) whom Zhao saw at the scene. After questioning, Shi claimed that he came to Santai County for fun, and bird hunting was only his personal entertainment activity, and no other people were involved.
Subsequently, the police investigated the temporary residence in Maliushu Village, Jingfu Town, and captured another suspect Lu (female, Guizhou native, over 40 years old) during the investigation. At the temporary residence where the two lived, the police found a double-door freezer. There were more than 5,000 bird carcasses packed in red and black plastic bags stacked inside the freezer. The number involved was particularly large. Nearly a hundred bird hunting tools were also found in the house, including a new net, a trap, and a spray gun, as well as dozens of hunting and trapping folders.
A record book found by the police at the scene that seemed to record the number of hunts showed: the date of the hunt, the name of the hunter, the specific number of hunts and other statistical details. According to preliminary calculations on site, from October 3 to October 29, 2019, there were 4 people involved in bird hunting, and the number of birds hunted reached a total of more than 80,000. After identification, the prey items seized at the scene included: national second-level key protected animals and three species of animals such as collared owl, rosefinch, chaffinch, and bunting.
After interrogation, the criminal suspects Shi and Lu confessed to the crime of hunting wild birds from Guizhou to Santai County with Chen Zheng and Chen De.
Through the contact information provided by the fugitive suspects Chen Mouzheng and Chen Moode, the police persuaded the two fugitive suspects to return. On November 19, 2019, the co-criminal suspects Chen Mouzheng and Chen Moode voluntarily surrendered.
Through interrogation, the police followed the clues and identified the criminal suspect Long Mouhua (male, Guizhou, over 40 years old) who was suspected of covering up and concealing the proceeds of the crime. With the full support and cooperation of the Guizhou police, Long Mouhua was captured and brought to justice in January 2020.
In September 2020, the Santai County Court sentenced the criminal suspects Chen Mouzheng, Chen Moude, and Shi Mou to fixed-term imprisonment ranging from two years and three months to two years and seven months in accordance with the law, and Compensation for ecological and environmental losses was RMB 1.5759 million.
Currently, the case of cover-up and concealment of criminal proceeds discovered during the extended investigation of the case is under further investigation.
