The difference between a detention center and a prison is as follows:

People held in detention centers and prisons are different: the detention centers hold criminals who have been arrested and detained according to law, while the prisons hold criminals who have been sentenced to death penalty with a two-year suspension, life imprisonment and fixed-term imprisonment;
2. The main tasks of detention center and prison are different: the task of detention center is to guard the detainees by armed guards to ensure safety; Educate offenders; Manage the life and health of criminals; Ensure the smooth progress of investigation, prosecution and trial. Prisons implement the principle of combining punishment with reform and combining education with labor to transform criminals into law-abiding citizens;
3. The competent departments of detention center and prison are different: the competent department of detention center is the people's procuratorate, and the competent department of prison is the judicial administrative department of the State Council;

Detention centers and prisons have different regulations on meeting family members: communication between detainees in detention centers and their close relatives living in China must be approved by the case-handling organ, and the request for meeting must be approved by the public security organ at or above the county level or the competent bureau or director of the state security organ. Criminals serving their sentences in prison may meet their relatives and guardians in accordance with regulations.
