Torch Festival has profound folk culture connotation and is called "Carnival of the East". Torch Festival is a traditional festival of Yi, Bai, Naxi, Jinuo and Lahu nationalities. Different ethnic groups hold Torch Festivals at different times, mostly on June 24th of the lunar calendar. The main activities are bullfighting, goat shooting, cockfighting, horse racing, wrestling, song and dance performances, beauty contests and so on. In the new era, the Torch Festival has been endowed with new folk functions and produced new forms.
From July 20th to August 30th, 2023, Liangshan Prefecture will hold the 8th Liangshan Yi Torch Festival and a series of cool summer Liangshan Tour activities. According to the Notice of Liangshan Prefecture People's Government Office on Some Holiday Arrangements in 2023, the Torch Festival will be closed for 7 days from August 10 (June 24th of the lunar calendar) to August 16.
Development and Protection of Torch Festival
The state attaches great importance to the protection of intangible cultural heritage. On May 20th, 2006, the Torch Festival of Yi people was approved by the State Council to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative lists.
20 10 On August 4th, thousands of people in Xichang, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province, dressed in festive costumes and danced with unique ethnic characteristics, which kicked off the 6th Liangshan Yi International Torch Festival in China. Liangshan Yi Torch Festival is one of the first list of intangible cultural heritage published in China. It is one of the top ten folk festivals in China and one of the top ten famous festivals in Sichuan. It has been included in the "20 10 World Intangible Cultural Heritage Declaration Project" by UNESCO.
In February, 2022, the Torch Festival (Yi Torch Festival) was listed in Sichuan's List of Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Projects, belonging to folk customs, with the number SC-X-4 (1).
