Information cocoon room: It's 2022. Why do people still believe that the earth is flat?

A few years ago, a foreigner who insisted on the "horizon theory (the earth is flat)" launched a crowdfunding campaign. He wants to use the money raised to launch a satellite, and the reason for launching the satellite is also very interesting: he hopes to find evidence that the shape of the earth is not a sphere, but a "disk".

The sponsors of crowdfunding thought that the photos of the earth taken by satellites from space were all fake, which were processed by NASA with PS software, so they wanted to launch satellites themselves to confirm it, but unfortunately, crowdfunding failed because the money was not in place. Although in the eyes of most people, this kind of crowdfunding is more like a joke or hype, in the past few years, the number of supporters of the "horizon theory" like this foreigner has increased dramatically. From professional athletes to pianists, from pop singers to rap boys, many celebrities have begun to actively support the horizon theory. You think these people are "teasing". No, in fact, a large number of people who claim that "the horizon is flat" think so from the heart. They simply believe that the earth is flat, which does not contain any hype factors.

1. How terrible is the existence of the information cocoon room?

How many people believe in horizon theory? According to incomplete statistics, as of September, 20021year, the registered members of American Horizon Theory Association were about 1 100. In addition to the members of the association, there are many people around the world who support the horizon theory. Horizon said that the association was founded in the mid-1950s. Samuel Shenton, the founder of the association, was a member of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Geographical Society. In today's words, Shenton is an academic expert. He didn't believe the statement in the book at all, insisting that the earth was flat. Since the establishment of the association, its association has published many arguments against the theory of "earth circle", such as:

"The engineers who designed the rails didn't design the rails to be curved because the earth is flat."

"In all the photos taken by people, the ground is straight."

"Landing on the moon is a scam of NASA. The photos of the earth taken from the moon by NASA are simply fake. "

There are still many childish arguments like the above. On Twitter, Facebook and other large social networks, it is widely said that the comments of the association and its members are regarded as jokes embellishing boring life. On facebook, someone even organized an activity: a Christmas party, where everyone got together and drank five whiskies, and then they became supporters of Pingping (ironically, Pingping Association, only normal people would believe your story if they were drunk). Of course, some people have raised objections-if the accuracy of whisky is very high, it may be less than five cups, and it may take three cups to make people doubt whether the earth is a sphere.

Why do people still believe in horizon theory in a society where information transmission is so developed, and the membership of horizon association has increased year by year in recent years? These people are largely trapped in the "information cocoon room".

To give a simple example, in the 1980s and 1990s, when the information was mainly transmitted by TV, books and newspapers, someone might have read Andersen's fairy tale The Ugly Duckling for the first time. In the description of The Ugly Duckling, the ugly duckling turned into a white swan. Some people have seen white swan in books and TV since childhood, and it is easy for them to equate "white swan" with "swan" over time. If this person sees a black swan with his own eyes one day in the future, his thoughts may be greatly impacted. Perhaps his first reaction will be "What species is black?" "What is this? Swan? No? " Under normal circumstances, in the process of seeking knowledge, only the black swan and the white swan have seen it, and it is not easy to fall into the misunderstanding of "color", so that we can understand the swan from a more essential perspective. Unfortunately, however, due to the deep-rooted information cocoon, some people simply won't admit that there is a black swan, just like those who firmly believe in it, they are trapped in the information cocoon all their lives.

In our daily life, more and more people begin to get lost in the cocoon of information and cannot extricate themselves. For example, anti-intellectual remarks such as "mainlanders can't afford tea eggs", "Dragon Boat Festival belongs to South Korea" and "the water after nuclear pollution is safe" should be taken as a joke.

Second, how to break through the information cocoon room?

1. If it's not the axiom of "the shortest straight line between two points", then we'd better get into the habit of empathy when considering problems and think about the essence of things from different angles.

2. The world is not black and white, and many things are diverse, so we can't look at problems with fixed thinking.

4. Learn to use retrieval software and master the ability to quickly screen effective information and filter interference information.

The story of three people becoming a tiger tells us that conformity will make people lose the ability of independent judgment and thinking.

If you are not sure about something, don't speak rashly. Think more, see more and even do more. After all, practice is the only way to test the truth.
