Indifference, no ambition, no quiet distance, where does it come from?

Everyone knows that this is a famous sentence in Zhuge Liang's Commandment. The Book of the Ten Commandments is also a famous article. Why are these two sentences particularly famous? You see, a lot of calligraphy works love to write "indifferent and bright aspirations" or "quiet and far-reaching". I used to think that these two sentences are catchy to read (obviously many classical Chinese are catchy), and they are the legacy of Zhuge Gong, who shocked the universe. I naturally keep them in mind, and as for the meaning, I have never delved into them. Until recently, I came out of my ignorance, gradually realized the responsibility on my shoulders, began to think about the planning of my life, and slowly put it into practice before I realized the profound meaning of this sentence. For those who are still struggling to realize their ideals, facing the more or less success of their peers around them, facing the happy life of driving a car with a girl, and facing the reality that you have started to make money and you may still be a graduate student, but the state subsidy is only enough for food and clothing, Zhuge Gong's words should make you burst into tears.

This sentence is actually translated into vernacular as "young people, look for the goal, just hold your horses, take your time." This is too important, especially for contemporary young people. After all, we face too many temptations. Okay, what is indifference? Indifference means being content with the status quo and not seeking progress? Not at all! Have you noticed that Ge Gong's northern expeditions again and again were all for the sake of Julian Waghann's early entry into the Central Plains and the rejuvenation of great men. How can such a Gong persuade his son to be content with the status quo? My understanding is that indifference means facing the temptation of the surrounding environment, facing the success of others, you should not be impatient, encourage your character slowly, enrich yourself slowly, improve your personal accomplishment and knowledge, and approach the goal step by step. Maybe no one can understand you, maybe this road is extremely difficult, maybe there are too many temptations in reality, but as long as you are indifferent enough, you can always understand what you want, that is, you can't be indifferent without a clear will.

Ok, look for the target, and then calm down and do it slowly. Step-by-step, down-to-earth, there may be failures. It doesn't matter. Once again, you didn't see that Gegong's Northern Expedition was defeated repeatedly, and Liu Bei got up from the quagmire of repeated failures, dried his blood and sweat, and started again and again. There may be a time when you have gained a lot, but you can't be proud and lose your composure. Don't you see, after the war in Hanzhong, the power of Liu Bei Group was unprecedentedly high, and its monarch and ministers were carried away by victory. Guan Yu launched the battle of Fancheng, but he couldn't get on well with Sun Quan Group, which eventually led to a fire in his backyard. Once Jingzhou fell, Ge Gong's long-term success in the Central Plains was lost, which is not a pity. Therefore, only by calmly dealing with all kinds of temporary successes or failures can we go further on the established road. This is what I understand as "no peace, no distance".

Let's review Ge Gong's life experience again. At the age of 28, Liu Bei invited him out of the mountain. Taking himself as an example, Liu Bei's sincerity of "I can't be humble as a minister and I can't be humble as a servant" moved him who had intended to be "born in troubled times and didn't ask Wen Da to be a vassal", and he came out to assist Liu Bei. However, is this really the case, not to mention whether Ge Gong is a well-read person. Look at Liu Bei's visit. He immediately took out Longzhong's right. Do you think he is a hermit living in Nanyang (or Xiangyang)? Isn't such a good plan prepared for a long time? I can see that he really wants to build a reputation. But he didn't come out of the mountain until he was twenty-eight. In fact, with his ability, he can go to any power and be a guest in minutes, which is too difficult for him to plow Wollongong. But because Ge Gong has other ambitions in mind, he is content to work here and bide his time. I think this is what he called "indifference"! And this is particularly important for his son Zhuge Zhan, who inherited his position as the marquis of Wuxiang. After all, as the second generation of officials, Zhuge Zhan faced much more temptations when he was young than Ge Gong. I think this is also why Ge Gong warned his son in his "exhortation" before he died that "it is unwise to ignore it, and it is not far away to ignore it". This is really because many young people are too impatient, too impatient and too easy to lose themselves.
