What is the network security review system?

According to Voice of China's National News Network, the National Internet Information Office released a message on May 22, 20 14, saying that in order to safeguard national network security and protect the legitimate interests of Chinese users, China is about to launch a network security review system, and important information technology products and services used by systems involving national security and public interests should pass the network security review.

The introduction of the network security review system will become the most effective legal basis for safeguarding national network security and play an important role in promoting the construction of a network power.

The network security review system does not target at any country or region, and treats network products and services with potential security risks equally, regardless of foreign companies or enterprises in China. The forthcoming network security review system stipulates that important information technology products and their providers entering China's market should be subject to network security review. The review focuses on the safety and controllability of products, aiming at preventing product providers from taking advantage of the convenience of providing products to illegally control, interfere with and interrupt user systems and illegally collect, store, process and utilize user-related information. Products and services that do not meet safety requirements will not be used in China.

According to the summary information, the review targets include products related to national security, national interests and the national economy and people's livelihood. The process of review includes three parts: discovery in advance, supervision in the process and punishment afterwards. Some officials revealed that there will be a third-party agency to test who will review this issue.

For products that have not entered the market, it is necessary to conduct a technical review of user information security, and at the same time assess whether the product will have an impact on national security and whether it will have a social and economic security impact such as monopoly. For products that have entered the market, these products are not absolutely safe. Patches and upgrades may bring new security risks, so they also need to be monitored.
