Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology is a national "double-first-class" construction university, which is a Class A construction university in Jiangsu Province's high-level university construction peak plan. The school was born to serve the national strategy of new China and the needs of national economic construction. 1960 the school of meteorology of Nanjing university (the predecessor of the school) was established and was affiliated to the former meteorological bureau of the central military commission.

Nanjing Institute of Meteorology 1963 was established independently, and 1978 was listed as a national key university. In 2000, he was transferred to the leadership of Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and renamed Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology in 2004. Since 2007, the school has been approved by Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, China Meteorological Bureau, Ministry of Education and State Oceanic Administration. Now it is a central and local university mainly managed by Jiangsu Province.

The main campus of the school is located in Jiangbei New District, Nanjing, covering an area of more than 2,000 mu. Jinniu Lake Industry-Education Integration Park is located in Jinniu Lake New District of Tianchang City, adjacent to Liuhe District of Nanjing City. Wuxi Campus is located in Dong Xi New Town, Wuxi City. It has a joint training base of Binjiang College (now transformed into Wuxi College) and Nanxin University Wuxi graduate students.

In addition, there are university science parks and their cultural tourism parks in Jiangbei New District, Liuhe District and Yuhuatai District of Nanjing. At present, there are about 36,830 full-time students, including about 28,300 undergraduates, about 7,300 graduate students and about 1.230 international students. The school has distinctive school-running characteristics, and atmospheric science has been selected as the national "world-class discipline" construction discipline, and won the A+ grade in the latest discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education.

Meteorology is a national key discipline. Eight disciplines, including earth science, engineering, computer science, environmental science and ecology, chemistry, agricultural science, material science and social science, rank among the top 1‰ of ESI disciplines, among which earth science and computer science rank among the top 1‰ of ESI disciplines.

There are 7 first-class disciplines such as atmospheric science, environmental science and engineering, information and communication engineering, management science and engineering, mathematics, history of science and technology, computer science and technology, 25 first-class disciplines and 19 master's degree authorization points. The school has postdoctoral research stations such as atmospheric science, environmental science and engineering, mathematics and management science and engineering, and 77 undergraduate majors are distributed in 9 disciplines: science, engineering, literature, management, economics, law, agriculture, art and teaching.
