General situation of School of Geographical Sciences, South China Normal University
The College of Geographical Sciences was established on the basis of 195 1 10 Department of Geography, Guangdong University for Nationalities and Arts. The geography department of Guangdong University of Arts and Sciences was formerly the Department of Social Service College of 1933. 1952 When the national colleges and universities were adjusted, the Department of Geography of Nanchang University and the Department of Economic Geography of Hunan University merged to form the Department of Geography of South China Normal University, and the College of Geographical Sciences was established in February 2004. The development of our institute embodies the painstaking efforts of a large number of older scholars represented by the famous geographer Professor Zeng. They have made brilliant achievements in the research on the concept of "Danxia landform", the historical process of the development of the Pearl River Delta, the development of the coastal sand landform of South China, the coastal landform of the Pearl River Delta, the agricultural division of Guangdong, and the regional geography of China. Since 1990s, teachers in our college have conducted fruitful research on the environment and its evolution, global change and its regional response, the development and management of coastal landforms, regional economy and regional planning, vegetation ecology and so on, and published a large number of teaching and research papers and works, which have achieved fruitful results. Over the past 50 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, our college has trained a large number of geography education and scientific research talents for South China, especially for Guangdong. At present, more than 5,000 students at all levels have graduated, and most of them have become the business backbone of their respective fronts.
The School of Geographical Sciences of South China Normal University has 45 faculty members and 32 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 9 professors, 8 associate professors, lecturers 17, senior experimenters 1 person, and deputy research librarians 1 person. There are 15 doctors, 9 masters and 3 in-service doctors among the teachers. Two people from our college were selected into the "Thousands of Talents Training Project" in Guangdong Province. Since 2002, two people in our college have won the first prize of provincial and ministerial excellent teaching achievements, two people have won the title of provincial and ministerial advanced teacher, 1 person has won the title of "Excellent Teacher in South Guangdong", and six textbooks and teaching books have been published. The college has been implementing a multi-level mode of running schools and training talents, and has trained a large number of geographical talents at all levels. After years of construction and development, there are now doctoral programs in physical geography, master programs in physical geography and human geography, three undergraduate majors in geographic science, geographic information system, resources, environment, urban and rural planning and management, and real estate management and land management 1 major. At the same time, great progress has been made in continuing education, such as master of education, correspondence undergraduate course, night university and so on. Among them, the undergraduate major of geographical science won the title of "Guangdong Famous Brand Major" in 2003; In 2003, "Physical Geography" was approved as a key construction discipline in Guangdong Province.
Geographical science (normal) majors mainly focus on cultivating geographical education talents; Geographic information system major mainly trains comprehensive talents in resources, environment, planning, tourism, transportation, scientific research units and universities, information technology enterprises, software companies and other relevant departments to carry out application engineering, technology development, decision-making and land management related to geographic information systems; The major of resources, environment and urban and rural planning and management mainly trains comprehensive talents who can engage in planning and management, decision-making consultation and relevant policies and regulations research in government departments, research institutes and universities such as resources, environment, land, economy, tourism, transportation and real estate. The major of real estate management and land management mainly trains applied talents to adapt to urban development, construction and management. There are nearly a thousand registered students in the college; It has a number of advanced experimental instruments and equipment such as laser particle size analyzer, atomic absorption element analyzer, negative ion analyzer, total station, color inkjet plotter, scanner and digital theodolite. Our college has established a complete teaching and research organization to ensure the smooth progress of teaching and scientific research. At present, there are three departments: the Department of Geographical Science, the Department of Geographic Information Science and the Department of Resources, Environment and Urban and Rural Planning Management. In addition, there are tropical geomorphology research institute, tourism research institute, regional and urban planning research center, historical geography research institute, Hong Kong and Macao research institute, tropical geography research institute and other scientific research institutions, as well as physical geography, regional physical geography, economic geography, map remote sensing correspondence teaching method, geological geomorphology and other five teaching and research offices and tour guide training centers. Tropical Geomorphology, a professional academic journal edited and published by our college, is distributed nationwide.
Our college attaches great importance to discipline construction and curriculum construction, and all professional courses meet the qualified curriculum standards. Among them, Economic Geography of China and Physical Geography of China were rated as provincial key courses. In terms of scientific research, it focuses on the study of geomorphology and environmental changes, natural disaster prevention and control countermeasures, GIS research, urban and regional economic development, urban ecology, eco-tourism and so on. In teaching, the teaching level of the whole department has been improved by strengthening the construction of teaching staff and the education of teachers' morality, vigorously improving the teaching environment and building new multimedia classrooms.
In terms of applied geography, teachers in our college have obtained many horizontal scientific research projects in tourism planning, economic development strategy, land use planning and so on, combining with the reality of Guangdong Province and serving the society. In addition, pioneering research has been carried out in the fields of human geography, geographic information system, landscape ecology and regional urban economic development, and a number of research results have been accumulated, and young academic leaders have thrived.
