1. Modern Chinese Dictionary (5th edition, June 2005, Commercial Press) explains the origin of this word, and then says: "Later, it was used to describe tall and beautiful new houses, as well as beautiful decorations and layouts" (P930).
2. The Dictionary of Modern Chinese Norms (edited by Li Xingjian, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Chinese Publishing House, 1, 2004) has this entry: "Miao. ~ underwater ballet/living room decoration ~ "(P892).
