The school was founded in 1956, and moved to Chongqing from Shanghai First Medical College (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University). Its predecessor was Chongqing Medical College, and 1985 was renamed Chongqing Medical University.
The first batch of units approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee with the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees are the first batch of demonstration bases for studying in China approved by the Ministry of Education. In 20 15, the school became a university approved by the Chongqing Municipal People's Government, the National Health and Family Planning Commission (formerly the National Health and Family Planning Commission) and the Ministry of Education. In 20 16, it became one of the first local universities to set up the "Academic Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Program for Colleges and Universities" ("1plan").
