How to calm your mind and practice Buddhism well?

Cicheng Shen Jia Rinpoche

As a beginner of Buddhism, as long as you practice diligently, you will encounter various problems in the process of listening, thinking, watching and Zen, such as where to start practicing, where to practice yourself, how to relate Buddhism to your daily work and life, and so on. If we don't figure out these problems in time, our revision of the law will stagnate, and without progress, we will waste time like blind people sitting in the lecture hall.

So if you have any questions during the practice, don't take them to heart, and I will try my best to answer them for you. As for the theoretical questions we read in books, we should ask as few questions as possible, because our thinking consciousness is boundless and it is impossible to answer them all, and I can't answer them all myself. Here I mainly ask my own practical questions.

Some people can't ask any questions At this time, you can refer to the questions raised by others. These problems may be encountered in our future practice. It will be very helpful for our future practice to make it clear now. One person's problem can solve many other people's problems, because each of us has different time of practice, different degree of wisdom and different experience of practice. Through such communication, we can get rid of many people's inner confusion and increase everyone's wisdom. 1, is there any way to hold a spell that can make people not tired?

A: When holding a spell, be clear-headed. First of all, you should clearly imagine your god. For example, when chanting the mantra of Amitabha, you should visualize the image of Amitabha, recite the mantra of Manjusri Bodhisattva, and visualize the image of Manjusri Bodhisattva in the void above your head. Then, before holding the mantra, you should keep your mind in harmony with the image of this Buddha. When holding a mantra, it is relaxed and natural. It is neither urgent nor slow, and the voice is neither high nor low-you can hear others, and the mantra itself, the voice of holding the mantra and your heart are also integrated. Your heart is clear, but there is an unspeakable feeling, so holding a mantra is easy to produce a feeling of peace and security, and you will not be tired. In this way, the power of holding spells is also great, so your confidence in practicing dharma will also increase, and your power to calm your troubles will also increase.

If the heart is not clean, there is not much merit in holding a spell. The heart is not clean because the foundation of meditation is not laid well.

2. When I read Buddhism, my heart was clean, no difference, no persistence. I am very happy, and there are many wonderful realms in the process of chanting. I don't know how to explain this.

A: You can see these manifestations. This is your own world, not the same world as others. We can all see the same world. You know in your heart what it is like at this time. The feeling of joy and happiness shows that although you have no big delusions, you still have subtle consciousness. These realms belong to the appearance of goodness, but they are changeable and belong to the law, so you should not pay too much attention to whatever realm appears.

I have confidence in both teachers and students, but I always doze off and my feet hurt when I practice the law. I feel that my karma is heavy and difficult to adjust. I hate myself: "Why are you so disappointing?" Pray for the blessing of the guru and teach me a little trick: how to keep yourself from being overwhelmed by karma?

A: This is not a matter of karma, but that you are not used to practicing Buddhism. Just like yoga, the body is stiff at first, and after a period of practice, all parts of the body will gradually become soft, and meditation is the same, which requires exercise. In the process of practicing Buddhism, we should be patient and keep the habit of practicing Buddhism regularly and uninterruptedly. When you start to learn meditation, the time should not be too long (120 minutes is enough), the time should be shorter, and the times should be more. Don't force yourself to continue to sit down when you are groggy and physically painful. The time of meditation is increasing bit by bit, such as meditation for ten minutes today, meditation for one or two minutes tomorrow, and gradually extended. After practicing for a period of time, meditation will feel very relaxed. In addition, the posture of meditation such as Buddhism is very important, such as the seven-sitting and nine-segment Buddha posture of Pilu, which are all very important. Once there was a Lohan who meditated on the mountain, and a monkey nearby learned to meditate and do good deeds with Lohan's Seven Pilu Branches and Nine Buddhas every day. The monkey's life finally became beautiful and interesting, which is the merit of meditation posture as Buddhism. In fact, when practicing, physical problems are easy to adjust, and the most difficult thing to adjust is mental problems.

4. How to get this meditation posture?

A: At present, there are two legacies handed down by Rinpoche, Lama of Yaqing Temple, namely Longsa and Qin Long. These two kinds of inheritance have different meditation postures, but they are all passed down from mouth to mouth. Therefore, if you want to get this meditation posture, you must first complete the five plus lines according to the requirements of the second revision of inheritance, and then find a sage who is destined for you to seek these two methods of inheritance.

My body hurts badly when I meditate. How should I adjust?

A: Don't meditate forcibly when your body hurts badly. You can use the pain of meditation to cultivate eccentricity and compassion. You can think that the suffering of all sentient beings is endless, and today I will bear this pain instead of all sentient beings. This merit of bodhicitta is incredible. If you don't have such a motive, then the pain you suffered today is only to get rid of a little of your old business, and there is no other merit. You can also regard this kind of pain as the blessing of the guru, who let you know this kind of pain and let you grow centrifugally. Through this practice, your sense of alienation, compassion and confidence in the guru's three treasures will increase. This is the real practice. Meditation is not the only exercise. If you are in poor health, go to therapy, and then go to meditation when you are cured. If you don't get treatment, your health will get worse.

6. Q: When I meditate alone at home, my heart is clean and I am not nervous, but when the guru takes us all to practice together, my body and mind are very nervous. Is this the blessing of the guru or my karma?

A: This is neither the blessing of the guru nor your karma, but the reason why your heart is too tight. The feeling of the body is that consciousness is at work. If your heart is nervous, so will your body. If your heart is relaxed, your body will become soft and warm. Don't worry, it will get better gradually.

7. I felt groggy when I was practicing dharma. How should I adjust?

A: Dizziness is related to diet and indoor light. This problem also occurs when you eat too much, the room is too dark and you are weak. See for yourself what the reason is before making adjustments. Don't eat too much or too little at ordinary times, especially when eating. If the dim light in the meditation place causes drowsiness, open the window and sit back. Pilu can sit for seven times, practicing Buddhism and bodhicitta. Meditation time is shorter, meditation times are more ... these methods are used for adjustment.

8. Q: I feel breathless every time I meditate for a while. I don't know why.

A: "Do you have altitude sickness?" "Not without meditation." "That should be the reason why your heart is too tight when you meditate. If the heart is too tight during meditation, some people will have headaches, chest tightness and asthma. You can relax a little, but not too loose. If it is too loose, you will want to run, and your heart will be scattered. If it is tight, you will slowly adjust. It can also be adjusted by slow and slender breathing. "

9. Q: The more I pay attention to my breathing during meditation, for example, the more I count to ten, the more confused my breathing becomes. How should I look at this situation?

A: This is because your heart is too tight when you meditate. Your heart is too tight to be natural. Please relax. If you are too nervous during meditation, there is no way to calm down; But if you are too loose, you can't, because if your heart is too loose, your five limbs will be scattered, so when you meditate, you should keep your body and mind loose and tight, and meditate in an elastic and balanced state.

10, Q: How to effectively treat delusions during meditation?

A: All beings have different roots and endless troubles. Therefore, the method of treating troubles explained by Buddhism is endless. In the practice of Buddhism in dzogchen, rough troubles go forward with the outside world by practicing * * *: the impermanence of death, the pain of reincarnation, the cause and effect of emptiness, and the rarity of individuals. When these foundations are laid, your sense of alienation will arise. When you are eccentric, your troubles will be reduced, and when you meditate, your heart will naturally be clean. When meditating, according to the requirements of inheritance, there must be a second practice. In the inheritance of Asian youth, the way to accommodate troubles varies with the realm of meditation. Generally, beginners can soothe their troubles by observing the four directions of practice, converting to the realm and holding spells. Practice alternately in peace. If you are a person who is already looking for unique skills, you can treat delusions according to the requirements of unique skills.

1 1. Q: Nowadays, many people think that meditation means living in an unconscious state. Does Rinpoche have any enlightenment in this regard?

A: No thought is a state in the process of meditation. There are two situations: being confused and being clear. If you persist in being confused, it is not the progress of meditation, but the problem of meditation. For example, when you meditate, you live in a mindless state, but you are dull, unconscious and spiritless. This is actually a problem in meditation. It is very important to change this mindless state into a clear state. If you are clear and mindless, you are very energetic and conscious. You should observe your meditation from this difference.

12, q: when I do yoga at home, I can only stay for a few minutes because I feel very groggy. However, when you join the group, you can settle down, but there are many delusions. How should Rinpoche be treated?

A: This is mainly because there is too little time for meditation training, and on the other hand, it is also because we have not followed the instructions of the guru to practice Buddhism. Don't meditate suddenly, it's not good.

13, q: it is difficult for family members to have special time to meditate like monks. How can they settle down in a short time?

A: It is very important for you to cultivate more centrifugal and bodhicitta. With these two, you can meditate for five or three minutes, which is very quiet. If there is no special time for meditation, you can meditate for a shorter time and more times. When you meditate, you must practice in order. Even if you meditate for half an hour, you should practice in order. You can visualize the impermanence of death, the pain of reincarnation, the cause and effect are not empty, and you can also visualize the refuge. These steps are very important. On the basis of this step, you can practice yoga.

14, Q: Disciples can't master breathing well during meditation, and even have chest pain, and they don't feel anything. What should I do?

A: This problem arises because your body and mind are too tense when you practice dharma. When you meditate, your body should sit in the Pilu seven-legged sitting method. Don't be too reluctant, keep it natural and relaxed. According to the requirements of inheritance and repair. Beginners should not meditate for too long at a time, but meditate more. Adjust breathing: slightly open your lips and breathe evenly, slowly and slender through your mouth, so that your delusions will be less and less and you will settle down easily; However, if you open your mouth too wide or breathe through your nose, you will have many illusions. When you are dizzy or delusional, you can take a long breath slowly, hold your breath for a moment, and then take a long breath slowly with the sound of "ah". It's called keeping watch. Beginners think a lot when they meditate, and they can't calm down. They can move forward by observing the rare leisure, the impermanence of life, the cause and effect of emptiness, and the pain of reincarnation. Or visualize conversion, pray for a guru, and practice yoga with spells; Or focus on the objects observed during your own practice, and then settle down in various convenient ways, and then naturally settle down in a state of ignorance. When you are confused or dizzy, use the convenient methods mentioned above to make your mind clear and concentrate, then naturally calm down and practice alternately. This is a way to stop observing and practicing. With the decrease of drowsiness, the time for observation and recitation can be gradually reduced, and the time for calming down can be gradually extended. After a period of training, I will definitely have the experience of meditation. The above are the methods for beginners to meditate, and further meditation must be practiced under the guidance of a noble guru.

15, q: I often cry when I meditate, and I can't stop. What happened? It'll be fine when you turn your mind. Sometimes you cry when you recite a spell, and sometimes your arms get numb.

A: This is a reaction to naturally adjust the body's qi pulse during meditation, and it is also a karmic obstacle. It will be all right after a while, so don't worry too much.

16, q: Disciple Xiuwu Jiahang's quality is not good. At present, the guru who is reciting Baiziming and spreading it to Canada asked me to recite Baiziming 300,000 times. Excuse me, guru, can I only hold this spell? I can't meditate well. Do I need to recite other spells?

Answer: Hold the mantra when you hold it, meditate when you meditate, and practice according to the requirements of the dharma.

The poor quality of practicing five plus lines and meditation is because the foundation of * * * advancing with the outside world has not been repaired and centrifugal force has not been born. Because I am too obsessed with the world, I can't let go, so when I practice the law, my heart is unclean and I have too many troubles and delusions. Or the desire for liberation is not strong, the heart is numb, and there is no memory, so the quality of practice is not good. If you can practice according to the requirements of inheritance, you will learn every step.

When you practice calligraphy, you can keep pace with the outside world while practicing * * *, and carefully observe the cause and effect, the pain of reincarnation and so on. And there is a kind of fear and regret, so that confession can have strength. Meditation on the basis of eccentricity and bodhicitta will be very clean, and there will be less drowsiness and falling off. We should work hard on basic practice.

17, Q: When I taught myself yoga at home, I set an alarm clock. But I often start thinking about time in about 20 minutes, and finally I can't calm down. Sometimes music or other spells are recorded, and Buddhist chanting machines are used. Used to help determine the time for meditation, music is also used to help calm down. I wonder if music is allowed?

A: At the beginning of meditation, my concentration was not enough. It's best not to use sound, because your heart can easily follow the sound, and you feel calm, but you don't really calm down. You can train silence by looking at an object (such as a part of an alarm clock). When your heart breaks up, you can take it back immediately and go back to this part. After training for a period of time, your heart will gradually calm down.

18, I can't relax when I calm down. Sometimes I feel particularly energetic and a little excited after meditation. Settle down again, I feel that my heart is hanging and it is difficult to settle down.

A: If you can't settle down, it's because your heart is too tight and you can't feel it yourself, but it's actually because your heart is too tight. Keep your heart in a state of elastic balance when you meditate.
