What is adsl? I never understood! !

What is ADSL?

Answer: ADSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a combination of transmission technologies, with copper telephone lines as the transmission medium. It includes HDSL, SDSL, VDSL, ADSL and RADSL, and is usually called xDSL. Their main differences are reflected in the difference of signal transmission speed and distance, and the difference of symmetry between uplink rate and downlink rate.

HDSL and SDSL support symmetric t1/e1(1.544mbps/2.048mbps) transmission. Among them, the effective transmission distance of HDSL is 3-4 kilometers, which requires 2-4 pairs of copper twisted-pair telephone lines; The maximum effective transmission distance of SDSL is 3 kilometers, and only one pair of copper wires is needed. Comparatively speaking, symmetrical DSL is more suitable for enterprise point-to-point connection applications, such as file transfer, video conferencing and other jobs with roughly the same amount of data sent and received. Compared with asymmetric DSL, the market of symmetric DSL is much smaller.

VDSL, ADSL and RADSL belong to asymmetric transmission. Among them, VDSL technology is the fastest among xDSL technologies. On a pair of twisted-pair copper telephone lines, the uplink data rate is 13 to 52Mbps, and the downlink data rate is 1.5 to 2.3 Mbps. However, the transmission distance of VDSL is only a few hundred meters, and VDSL can be used as an economical and efficient alternative to FTTH. At present, VOD (Video on Demand) in Shenzhen is realized through this access technology. ADSL supports the uplink rate of 640Kbps to 1Mbps and the downlink rate of 1Mbps to 8Mbps on a pair of copper wires, and the effective transmission distance is within the range of 3-5 kilometers. RADSL can provide the same speed range as ADSL, but it can dynamically adjust the access speed of users according to the quality of twisted-pair copper wire and the transmission distance. It is these characteristics of RADSL that make RADSL an ideal technology for high-speed internet surfing, video on demand (IAV) and remote L an access, because in these applications, users often download more information than upload (send instructions).

How is the development of ADSL?

A: With the explosive development of the Internet, commercial applications and multimedia services on the Internet have also been rapidly promoted. In order to enjoy various services on the Internet, users must access the network in some way. In order to realize the digitalization and broadband of users' access to the network and improve the speed of users' access to the Internet, FTTH is the inevitable development direction of future user networks. However, due to the high cost of optical fiber user networks, most user networks will continue to use the existing copper wire loop in the next decade or even decades. Therefore, in recent years, people have put forward many transitional broadband access network technologies, including N-ISDN, Cable Modem, ADSL and so on. , in which ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber)

At present, the upsurge of ADSL has swept the world. MIC (Microsoft, Intel, Compaq), the leader in PC industry, and other major network companies in the world, such as 3COM, Cisco, Siemens, Alcatel, Paradyne, etc., have successively launched ADSL products and devoted themselves to the development of ADSL. Many telecom companies and ISPs all over the world are also promoting their ADSL services, with North America and Singapore taking the lead, Japan, Taiwan Province Province, South Korea and other countries have also entered the experimental stage, China Telecom has carried out relevant network tests in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Fujian and other places, and Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai have entered the practical stage. The year 2000 will be the year when ADSL will go to the general public.

What are the main features of ADSL?

A: 1) The transmission rate is high.

ADSL supports the upload rate of 640Kbps to 1Mbps and the download rate of 1Mbps to 8Mbps, with an effective transmission distance of 3-5 kilometers. You can also dynamically adjust the user's access speed according to the quality and transmission distance of twisted-pair copper wire. The following is a set of comparative data:

Access mode modem dial DDN private line ISDN ADSL

The standard rate is 33.6kbps/56kbps 64kbps/2mbps 64kbps/2mbps1.088mbps/8mbps.

2) surfing the internet and making phone calls do not interfere with each other. The more attractive thing about ADSL is that it can be stored on the same telephone line as ordinary telephones, and the telephone can be answered on an ordinary telephone line, and ADSL can be transmitted while making a phone call, without affecting each other. It will transmit data and voice signals on the same copper wire, and the data signals will not pass through the telephone exchange equipment, thus reducing the burden on the telephone exchange. There is no telephone exchange, which means that there is no need to pay telephone charges and dial when using ADSL to surf the Internet.

3) convenient installation and use

ADSL installation includes local line adjustment and user equipment installation. On the local side, the service provider connects the user's original telephone line to ADSL local equipment, which is extremely simple to operate. The ADSL installation on the user side is also very simple and convenient. As long as the telephone line is connected to the filter, a 2-core telephone line is connected between the filter and the ADSL modem, and a twisted-pair network cable is connected between the ADSL modem and the computer network card, the hardware installation can be completed (the installation principle is shown in the figure), and then the IP, DNS and gateway parameters in the TCP/IP protocol can be set. The installation work has been completed. ADSL is easier to use. Because ADSL doesn't need to dial, it is always online. Users can enjoy high-speed Internet access and make phone calls just by connecting the ADSL power supply.

4) Provide a variety of advanced services.

At present, ADSL lines in Shenzhen have provided Internet high-speed broadband access services. Users can enjoy a variety of broadband multimedia services for free by accessing the corresponding sites through ADSL, such as www.sz.supergnet.com, a broadband website of Shenzhen Vision, a video-on-demand concert hall and an online theater on www.gz.supergnet.com, a broadband website of Guangzhou Vision. Online games in Shenzhen Game Center (www.chinagame.net); Network TV of Shenzhen TV Station (www.realtv.sz.supergnet.com), etc.

ADSL individual users also have a static IP address, and LAN users have four static IP addresses. Individual users can set up a personal homepage to let other netizens on the video connection see their own style. LAN users can set up their own websites on China Multimedia Public Information Network, providing services such as WWW, FTP and E-MAIL. With the further popularization and application of ADSL technology, ADSL access can also provide peer-to-peer telemedicine, remote teaching, remote video conferencing and other services.

What are the problems in China's network at present?

A: According to the statistics of CNNIC (China National Network Information Center), as of June 3 1, 1, 997, the number of netizens in China reached 620,000, of which 49. 1% users thought that the most disappointing thing about surfing the Internet was that it was too slow, and 36.2% users thought that the Internet charges were too high. As of June 30th, 1998, in less than one year, the above three statistics nearly doubled, namely: 1 175000, 88.9%, 6 1.2%. Therefore, with the rapid expansion of the number of Internet users in China, the slow network speed and high cost have increasingly become two major obstacles to the development of Internet in China.

Can ADSL solve these problems?

A: Take Shenzhen as an example. In 2000, the number of Internet users reached 654.38 million, nearly double that of last year. Most of them are looking for a high-speed and cost-effective way to surf the Internet.

According to the actual situation of Internet users and market demand, Shenzhen Data Communication Bureau first adopted RADSL (hereinafter referred to as ADSL) technology to provide users with broadband high-speed access services. When ADSL was introduced in Shenzhen, it was not "aristocratic" because it was an advanced high-speed access technology, but positioned as a "popular" high-speed access service. (At present, among ADSL users, individual users and enterprise users each account for half, indicating that ADSL has entered small companies and family users, and ordinary users can afford it, indicating that the current price positioning of Shenzhen Data Bureau is basically reasonable. ). Therefore, compared with other access methods, ADSL access in Shenzhen has always maintained a high cost performance (see the table below for specific tariffs).

Personal PC users will be charged 3800 yuan 400 yuan/month 100 yuan/month for 50 times.

The one-time charge for PC users is 3800 yuan 500 yuan/month 100 yuan/month.

The one-time charge for LAN users 100 is 3800 yuan 1500 yuan/month 100 yuan/month.

Do I need to dial to use ADSL?

Answer: There are two ways to access ADSL: virtual dialing and private line access. Users who use virtual dialing mode use dialing programs similar to MODEM and ISDN, and their usage habits are no different from the original mode. Users who use private line access can access the Internet as long as they are turned on.

The so-called virtual dialing means that when surfing the Internet with ADSL, the user name and password are the same (the same as the original MODEM and ISDN access), but the ADSL connection is not the specific access number such as 163 or 8888, but the IP address of the ADSL access of the so-called virtual private network VPN.

What's the comparison between ADSL and Cable Modem?

Answer: Compared with wired mode, ADSL technology has considerable advantages. Cable Modem's HFC access scheme adopts hierarchical tree structure, which has the advantage of high bandwidth (10M), but this technology itself is a rough bus network, which means that users have to share limited bandwidth with neighboring users. When the number of users on a line increases sharply, its speed will slow down. Moreover, relevant data show that HFC scheme must take into account the existing cable TV programs in most cases, occupying a part of bandwidth and leaving only a part for transmitting other data signals, so the theoretical transmission rate of cable modems can only reach half. Experiments of foreign companies show that its rate is reduced to 1M-2Mbps, and the common rate is 400K-500Kbps. On the whole, even in an ideal state, HFC is only equivalent to a shared bus Ethernet of 10Mbps * *, while ADSL access scheme is more advanced in network topology, because each user has a separate line connected to the ADSL local terminal, and its structure can be regarded as a star structure, and its data transmission bandwidth is exclusive to each user.

How does ADSL compare with ordinary dial-up modems and N-ISDN?

Answer: Compared with ordinary dial-up modems, which have the highest speed of 56K and the speed of N-ISDN 128K, the speed advantage of ADSL is self-evident.

Compared with ordinary dial-up modems or ISDN, ADSL is more attractive, because it transmits data and voice signals on the same copper wire, and the data signals do not pass through telephone exchange equipment, thus reducing the load of telephone exchanges and eliminating the need for dialing. Always online belongs to private line access mode. This means that you don't need to pay extra telephone charges when using ADSL to surf the Internet.

How to install ADSL equipment?

Answer: ADSL installation includes local line adjustment and customer equipment installation. On the local side, the service provider can connect the user's original telephone line to ADSL local equipment in 2~3 minutes; The ADSL installation on the user side is also very simple and convenient. As long as the telephone line is connected to the filter, a dual-core telephone line is connected between the filter and ADSL modem, and a crossover network cable is connected between ADSL modem and computer network card, the hardware installation can be completed, and then the IP, DNS and gateway parameters in TCP/IP protocol are set, and the installation work is completed. It is easier to use ADSL. Because ADSL doesn't need to dial, in always online, users can enjoy high-speed Internet access and make phone calls just by connecting ADSL power supply.

How to set up LAN users?

Answer: There is little difference between ADSL installation of LAN users and stand-alone users. Just add another hub and connect the hub with the ADSL modem with a direct network cable.

What are the specific applications of ADSL?

Answer: In the early stage of development, ADSL was specially designed for video programs on demand, and the downlink channel was asymmetric and high-speed. With the rapid development of Internet, ADSL, as a high-speed Internet access technology, has more vitality, making it possible to provide multimedia services on the existing Internet.

At present, ADSL in Shenzhen mainly provides Internet high-speed broadband access services. Users can enjoy a variety of broadband multimedia services free of charge by accessing the corresponding sites through ADSL, such as Shenzhen Vision Broadband Network Site: www.sz.supergnet.com, Guangzhou Vision Broadband Network Site: VOD, Concert Hall, online cinema, etc. In www.gz.supergnet.com; Shenzhen Game Center: online games in www.chinagame.net; Shenzhen TV Station: www.realtv.sz.supergnet.com Internet TV, etc.

ADSL individual users have a fixed static IP address, and individual users can set up a personal homepage to let other netizens on the video link see their own style. ADSL LAN users have four fixed static IP addresses. Companies applying for ADSL LAN access can set up their own websites on China public multimedia network (video link) to provide services such as WWW, FTP and Email. ADSL service has enough bandwidth for LAN users to enjoy, and users can provide Internet services for LAN users of the whole company through proxy servers.

Because ADSL is an access video transmission based on ATM trunk network, it can also provide VPN (Virtual Private Network) service based on ATM or IP.

With the further popularization and application of ADSL technology, ADSL access will also provide peer-to-peer telemedicine, remote teaching, remote video conferencing and other services.

What is video-on-demand service?

Answer: Because ADSL is fast, VOD (Video on Demand) service can be realized. Broadband video link website provides a large number of video programs, educational and scientific materials. Users can use the high-speed access of ADSL lines to watch different types of programs according to their own preferences, and they can also watch VOD programs in other cities that have opened the service. Users who choose the VOD function need to fill in the VOD account and password (if the user fills in "ABC", the VOD account is gzDSLABC@VOD.gd). ADSL access modes are divided into two categories: virtual dialing and private line. Users who choose "virtual dialing" access mode need to fill in the password of VOD account to dial, and the account number is the same and the password is the same. When using VOD function, the line bandwidth needs1.5m. When ADSL virtual dial-up users use gzxxxxx @ 169a.gd or gzxxxxx @ 169b.gd, the line bandwidth is only 5 12K, so the VOD function cannot be used. When using gzxxxxxxxx @ 169a. VOD account, bandwidth up to 1.5M, VOD can be used normally.

What are the requirements for the hardware equipment of the client?

Answer: Users should have a computer with a size of 586 or above (due to the large amount of video data transmitted through broadband video links, it is recommended that the computer be equipped with more than 64M memory, and the video card should have more than 2M video memory); You must also have a network card (10M or 100M), and the price of the network card ranges from tens of yuan to more than 300 yuan. In addition, ADSL terminal equipment must be configured, and only Alcatel (France) local terminal equipment provided by the telecommunications bureau can be used. This equipment is divided into two parts: filter (splitter) and digital-to-analog converter (ANT function is equivalent to Modem), and the price is 2800 yuan; You can also choose to rent. Rent 280 yuan/month. After one year of lease, the equipment will be owned by the user.

What are the requirements for subscriber lines when installing ADSL?

Answer: Because ADSL technology divides the frequency of telephone lines, users must have installed telephones. The local telephone building connected to the telephone line must be an ADSL node. Moreover, the distance between the location where ADSL is installed and the ADSL node of the telecommunications bureau shall not exceed 3 kilometers. The above conditions are indispensable. Subscriber telephone lines installed with ADSL must be straight local telephone lines, and ADSL cannot be installed on lines passing through customer exchanges or small switchboard; If the user connects to the extension, the ADSL splitter must be connected before the junction box, that is, the external line is directly connected to the filter; ADSL cannot be installed on the line that has been converted to ISDN for the time being.

How to apply for ADSL?

Answer: Users can access the network through virtual dial-up and private line, two of which are divided into two business categories: Class A and Class B. Class A users can only access China public multimedia information network (i.e. video link); Class B users can access China public multimedia information network and Internet. In addition, there is VOD account mode (during the promotion period, Web VOD account is attached to Class A and Class B users by virtual dialing and private line mode. )

What kind of change business can I handle and how to change it?

Answer: change to 1. Change the access mode (mutual change of dedicated line access and dial-up access mode); 2. Change the speed of private line access; 3. Changes in access rights of Class A and Class B; 4. increase the IP address; 5. Change the user name; 6. Change the payment name; 7. Change the payment method. To apply for business change, you need to go to the business hall and fill out the ADSL Business Change Application Form.

Which cities have opened ADSL? How to apply for ADSL? Where to apply?

A: Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Guangzhou's application places are in major telecom business halls. If the user meets the requirements and has a free line, it can be installed, and the whole process will take about two weeks. Individual users with ID cards, unit users with company official seal, financial official seal, applicant's ID card. Virtual users need to fill in ADSL user application form when applying for business, and ChinaNet user access responsibility book when applying for class B business; Dedicated line users need to fill in the ADSL User Application Form and the Audio-visual Dedicated Line User's Responsibility Letter when handling business. How to install ADSL?

Answer: 1. Connect network cable and telephone line with ADSL and computer.

2, open the ADSL power supply software:

1) Upgrade the dial-up network (run dun1.3 \ msdun13.exe on the ADSL CD). If the system is WIN95/97, it needs to be upgraded, and the version above WIN98 does not need to be upgraded.

2) install the ADSL dialing program WINPOET (run WINPOET \ WINPOET.exe)3 in ADSL CD) 3) run winpoet to dial.

3. Connect ADSL terminal equipment:

The terminal equipment of ADSL has two parts: splitter and ANT. The filter plays the role of frequency division, and there are three interfaces on the panel: ADSL interface, external interface and telephone interface. ANT plays the role of digital-to-analog conversion, and there are three interfaces on the panel: line, ATM and Ethernet. The external line is directly connected to the "external line interface" of the filter, the "telephone interface" can be connected to the ordinary telephone, and the "ADSL interface" is connected to the port of ANT with RJ 1 1 wiring. ANT plays the role of digital-to-analog conversion, and there are three interfaces on the panel: line, ATM and Ethernet. You can use the RJ 1 1 connector (ordinary telephone LINE) to transmit the high-frequency signal from the ADSL interface of the filter to the LINE interface of ANT, and then use the RJ45 line (network line) of the Ethernet interface to connect with the network card in the computer. The ATM interface is used to connect ATM equipment, and it is not needed for the time being.

How to use ADSL to surf the Internet;

Answer: After connecting the device, users in virtual dialing mode should also install PPPoE dialing software (the device comes with it). After installing the software, there will be one more virtual network card in the Network of Control Panel. Select dynamic IP. Class A user IP:172.18.100.1gateway:172.18.100. 438+00.123.16.193 subnet mask: 255.255. 0 VOD user IP:172.108.108. Users who surf the Internet through the private line only need to set the assigned IP address and automatically connect to the network every time they turn on their computers. The local system will allocate different bandwidths according to the user's online mode and online account.

What kind of protocol does ADSL use?

Answer: The protocols used by ADSL include PPPoE, PPPOVER, RFC 1483 Bridge and RFC 1483 Routing. At present, the telecommunication bureau supports PPPoE protocol.

What is the range of ADSL lines?

A: Like ordinary users of 169, Class A starts with 172 and Class B starts with 10.

What are the characteristics of ADSL access technology?

Answer: The biggest advantage of 0ADSL access technology is that there is no need to set up a special network. It can use the most widely distributed telephone copper wire as the transmission medium and obtain three information channels on a copper twisted pair (telephone line). A channel serving the standard push phone, a medium-speed uplink channel with a rate of 640 kbps- 1.0 Mbps, and a high-speed downlink channel with a rate of 1 Mbps-8 Mbps can work at the same time. What does ADSL rely on to achieve all this? Speaking of it, this is due to its advanced modulation and demodulation technology. At present, there are two widely used ADSL modulation and demodulation technologies: CAP and DMT. Among them, DMT modulation and demodulation technology is recommended by American ADSL national standard and set as standard by ANSI organization because of its advanced technology, and it is the most promising modulation and demodulation technology at present. This paper mainly introduces DMT modulation technology.

In DMT modulation and demodulation technology, the 0-4KHZ frequency band on a pair of copper telephone lines is used to transmit telephone audio, and the 26 kHz- 1. 1 MHz frequency band is used to transmit data, which is divided into 25 uplink channels and 249 downlink subchannels with a width of 4KHZ. After bit allocation and buffering, the input data becomes a bit block, and then it is transmitted to the subchannel after TCM coding and QAM modulation. Theoretically, 15 bits of data can be transmitted per Hz, so the theoretical uplink speed of ADSL is 25× 4× 15 = 15 Mbps, while the theoretical downlink speed is 249× 4 15 = 65438+. In addition, DMT has good anti-interference ability, and can dynamically adjust the transmission rate of subchannels according to the actual interference of lines and external environment. The transmission rate of subchannels with interference can be reduced to 8 bits/Hz, while the places without interference or less interference can still maintain a higher rate. At the same time, DMT can also transfer the data stream in the subchannel with strong interference to other channels, thus ensuring the high speed and integrity of data transmission.

Can ADSL provide LAN access?

A: Yes, there are three ways:

1) Set the host directly connected to the Internet through ADSL as a proxy server, and then clients on the local LAN access external information resources through this proxy server. The advantage of this method is that you need to apply for an account or an IP address, and the local client can use the reserved IP address;

2) Apply to the telephone office for 1 IP address for each computer on the local area network through a dedicated line. The advantage of this method is that there is no need to establish a special proxy service gateway. The disadvantage is that limited by the current technology, the telephone office can only provide 16 IP addresses to the LAN at most.

3) Connect a router behind ADSL, and apply to the telephone office for an additional IP address to the computer in the local area network. The telephone office will set the route for this address and then access the Internet. The advantage of this method is that the number of computers in the LAN is not limited, but an extra router is needed.

4) An ADSL modem with routing and firewall functions on the client will be launched soon, which can accomplish any of the above three ways without adding any proxy server or router.

ADSL problem

As can be seen from the above introduction, ADSL is a very attractive high-speed access scheme, but like all other technologies, ADSL also has some problems in its promotion.

The first is the interoperability between the old standards and different manufacturers. ADSL technology uses high-frequency signals that are not used in telephone systems to transmit data. The existing modulation technologies include 2B 1Q, QAM, CAP and DMT. At present, different manufacturers often adopt different modulation technologies, which leads to the problem that local and client products of different manufacturers do not cross-use. Shenzhen Data Bureau is now facing such a problem. Alcatel's products are widely used in local terminals and customer terminals, but it has used some Paradye products before, Paradye uses CAP code and Alcatel uses DMT code, which has caused some problems. If the user's original office uses Paradye equipment, then when the user moves to the office using Alcatel equipment, the ADSL modem equipment at the user's end must be replaced. Although this problem will be solved step by step with the introduction of the G.lite standard, at present, it is still a very prominent contradiction.

Secondly, the performance of ADSL products is unstable (here refers to all ADSL products at present, not a certain brand). Mr. Zhang, who is in charge of ADSL in Shenzhen Telecommunications Bureau, has tested many brands of ADSL products and found that there are some common problems, such as sometimes computers are easy to crash, sometimes mobile phones can be connected but not connected to the Internet, and sometimes mobile phones can be connected to the Internet but not connected. These have yet to be further solved by manufacturers.

Third, ADSL products are expensive. The attached table lists the tariff tables of ADSL of Shenzhen Data Bureau and Tianwei Cable Modem of Shenzhen Cable Radio and Television. As can be seen from the table, compared with its main competitor Cable Modem, ADSL has no advantage in price. For individual users, the cost of ADSL terminal equipment of 3800 yuan is high, and the monthly usage fee of 400 yuan is not cheap, thus forming a threshold. An important reason for the good promotion of ISDN in Shanghai is the appropriate tariff. For individual users, Shanghai Telecom will provide NT 1-Plus for users free of charge (users can make calls only by connecting to ordinary telephones); Secondly, the bureau provides PC cards to users at the preferential price of 340 yuan (market price of 620 yuan), and is fully responsible for installation and debugging; Third, the equipment access fee is exempted. If ADSL can adopt flexible methods in price, I believe it can attract more users.

The last problem is that ADSL is very sensitive to distance and line conditions, so the speed is sometimes difficult to guarantee. Users who are far away from the local telephone office or users whose local telephone lines are in poor condition will have an impact on the rate of ADSL. In addition, when local speed is not an obstacle, new bottlenecks will appear, such as narrow international exports. The reporter tried to visit foreign websites with ADSL, which was much slower than visiting local websites. Moreover, because technicians have to go to users' homes for on-site installation and debugging, it has also caused certain difficulties for the large-scale promotion of ADSL.

ADSL currently includes three kinds of fees:

1, and the access fee is 3,000 yuan for individual users (including handling fee and material fee for 200 yuan/line).

5,000 yuan for business users (including handling fee and material fee, 400 yuan/line).

note:

(1) Access fee refers to handling fee, equipment fee, installation fee, material fee, port supporting fee, etc. Fees to be paid when users apply for broadband network for the first time.

(2)ADSL modem is provided by the bureau, and the property right belongs to the bureau.

2. Basic monthly fee

The basic monthly fee is free.
