Shunyi District has a long history. The Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period belonged to Yan State and the Han Dynasty belonged to Yuyang County. It was located in Zhou Shun in the late Tang Dynasty and changed to Shunyi County in the early Ming Dynasty. After the founding of New China, it belonged to Tongzhou District, Hebei Province, and was transferred to Beijing in April 1958. 1March, 1998, with the approval of the State Council, Shunyi was divided into districts from counties, which was called Shunyi District.
