Guangzhou is also called Yangcheng and Guangzhou. According to legend, under the boundless sea and sky in Yuexiu Mountain, there are five immortals dressed in colorful clothes, holding ears of rice and riding colorful sheep, wishing the people peace and harmony.
There is a Five Immortals Temple on the hillside of Huifu West Road in Guangzhou. It was built in Shixianfang in the Northern Song Dynasty, which is now in front of the Finance Department of Beijing Road. It is said that this is the resting place of the Five Immortals riding sheep. Later, it moved to Yaozhou, West Lake, and moved to this site in the Ming Dynasty. There are five immortals and five sheep statues in the original scene, which are regarded as "Valley God" by local residents. There is a main hall and a mountain gate, in front of which there is a pair of Ming Dynasty stone carving Kirin. The main hall is one of the few existing Ming Dynasty wooden buildings in Guangzhou. On the left side of the main hall is a primary rock with a footprint-shaped cavity, commonly known as "immortal thumb print", which is said to be immortal footprints. So it is also called "Sui Shidong". In the Ming Dynasty, "Ear Cave" was also listed as one of the "Eight Scenes of Yangcheng". There is a folklore about the nickname of Guangzhou and the Five Immortals. When Zhou Yiwang was in Guangzhou, there was a severe drought, thousands of miles of bare land and no crops, but the government still kept down the rent and grain. At the foot of the mountain, a father and son who lived alone had no food, so the housekeeper took my father away. My son was less than sixteen years old, helpless, crying and praying to God, tears streaming down his face. Five immortals were moved by it. They were wearing colorful clothes, with colorful sheep on their legs and ears of wheat falling from the sky in their hands. The immortal gave the ear of grain to the teenager and said, "Rub the millet down at once, plant it tonight, water and fertilize it, and you can harvest it at dawn." The teenager did this, and sure enough, Huang Chengcheng and golden millet were harvested early the next morning. Teenagers are bent on saving their fathers and picking millet to redeem their fathers. The housekeeper saw that he was suspicious and asked again and again, so the teenager had to tell the truth. After releasing the father and son, the government decided to arrest the five immortals. The father and son thanked each other and quickly tipped off the fairy, who was naturally grateful and told them to go home at once and scatter all the food left in the field. In this way, the government will not be able to grab it, and the people will have food to eat. Just then, officials swarmed in and five immortals rose calmly. Soak in the air and climb the clouds. The chief had no choice, so he went back to catch the five-color sheep left by the immortal, but the five sheep immediately became stubborn stones, which could not be pushed or pulled down, so the housekeeper had to give up.
Today, the Five Immortals Temple and its sculptures have long since disappeared, but today people have re-established a five-sheep stone statue on the Yuexiu Mountain, with the sheep leading the way, the mouth closing with the ears of grain and surrounded by four sheep, which is lifelike. This statue has always been regarded as a symbol of Guangzhou. Guangzhou has many aliases. In addition to Guancheng and Suicheng, there are also Yangcheng, Xiancheng, Shiyang City, Yangshi City and Xianyang City, all of which are related to this legend.
