The following is the memory of one of his students (/New/PublicForum/Content.asp? Books and magazines. idArticle = 44288):
In my senior year, Teacher Fan Weigang taught us Literature of Song Dynasty and the optional course Yuefu. He is the most respected scholar in my alma mater, not only because he is a disciple of Mr. and Mr. Xia, but also because of his founder and rigorous and solid academic foundation. When talking about the students of Hunan Normal University criticizing him, Jenny was full of complaints, but Teacher Fan laughed it off and took it lightly. He can persist in changing a book for thirty years. In his later years, he wrote few articles. In Zhu Men's Bad Wine and Meat, I saw a paper on the pronunciation of "smelly" and a paper on Han Yu's historical theory and the artistic characteristics and aesthetic value of his pen. I am amazed by its rigorous research and rich talents. I know that the old scholars of their generation can only write a few weighty papers in their lifetime, and they are as poor as a church mouse. He studies knowledge and annotates ancient books. The best example can be seen in Mr. xie guozhen's Answer to Comrade Fan Weigang's Tang Poems. Here, you can also see the help of the older generation of scholars to the younger generation of young students and feel the strong academic atmosphere of that era.
Teacher Fan, who studied Xin Qiji's poems in the early Qing Dynasty, came across the selected Two Tang Poems. He thinks this is a good reading for learning and appreciating Tang poetry, and plans to revise and publish it. Because Teacher Fan was criticized as a "Rightist" at Hunan Normal University, he went to work in the library. There are many shortcomings in the book "Tang Poetry of Er 'anshuo" collected in the library of Normal University, and there is a lack of information about this book at hand. So Teacher Fan wrote to Mr. Deng Guangming, a senior who studied the history of the Song Dynasty, asking for help. Out of enthusiasm, Mr. Deng recommended Mr. xie guozhen to Mr. Fan. He worked in the Third Research Institute of China Institute of History and studied the history of Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Teacher Xie also enthusiastically helped, signing a letter to Teacher Fan published in Guangming Daily on March 1963. At that time, the title of the article was "Answering Comrade Fan Weigang's Talk about Tang Poetry in An Temple".
After proofreading, Mr. Fan experienced various movements and the Cultural Revolution, so there was no condition to publish this book at that time. It was not published by Henan Zhongzhou Ancient Books Publishing House until 1990. At this time, Mr. Xie has returned to Daoshan for many years. Teacher Fan always has tears in her eyes when she recalls this incident. He said that Mr. Xie is a very learned man.
My college graduation thesis was originally aimed at Lu Xun in modern literature, but finally I had to change it because the teacher wanted to guide Hong Kong and Taiwan literature and popular literature. Finally, I thought of "Lu You's Dream Poems" mentioned by Teacher Fan in the Literature of Song Dynasty, thus determining the direction, and the teacher served as the thesis tutor. At this time, Mr. Fan has retired at home at the age of 72. In order to help me write my thesis, he also lent me Yao Yao's History of Medieval Literature. I am deeply grateful to Teacher Zhou and Teacher Fan.
Teacher Fan is over eighty now, and Teacher Cheng is over seventy. I wish them a long life, peace and happiness.
1997 When I met the biggest setback in my life, it was Teacher Fan who reminded me to remember his graduation message: "A gentleman strives for self-improvement." Therefore, I have always regarded it as my motto in my life and work, and I remember it to this day.
