Before Hong Kong's return to the motherland, Xinhua News Agency Hong Kong Branch, as the highest representative office of China people and China government in Hong Kong, performed various duties entrusted by the central authorities.
After Hong Kong's return to the motherland, Xinhua News Agency Hong Kong Branch continued to perform its duties as a working organization authorized by the Central People's Government.
The Hong Kong SAR Government announced in the Government Gazette on July 2 1999 that the Hong Kong Branch of Xinhua News Agency is one of the institutions established by the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR. 1999 12.28 The 24th executive meeting in the State Council decided to rename the Hong Kong Branch of Xinhua News Agency, the working organ authorized by the Central People's Government, as the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Since its establishment, the Liaison Office (formerly Hong Kong Branch of Xinhua News Agency) has always carried out its work in accordance with the responsibilities entrusted by the central authorities in different historical periods of China's revolution, construction and reform, and made important contributions to the construction and reform and opening up of new China, the return of Hong Kong to the motherland and the prosperity and stability after the return, and the implementation of "one country, two systems". As an institution of the central government in Hong Kong, the Liaison Office is an important channel for extensive contact with all walks of life in Hong Kong and an important bridge for promoting exchanges and cooperation between the two places.
