Speaking of Zhou Zhongji, he is quite famous in Hong Kong.

Looking back 1950, Hong Kong was in full swing after the war. Several young people from Shanghai came here with strong business plans. After several struggles, he became a pioneer in Hong Kong's textile industry and co-founded Nanlian Enterprise Co., Ltd., a large Asian textile and garment joint venture. Among these young people in Shanghai are Zhou Wenxuan and Zhou Zhongji.

Zhou Zhongji has won the attention of Hong Kong people with persistent pursuit, unremitting struggle and impressive business performance.

However, as the years passed, the Zhou brothers were not satisfied with their achievements. They have found a new way to explore new fields and create more useful wealth for mankind.

In the 1980s, it was very difficult for people in China to use computers. Inspired by the "four-corner number search method", Zhou Zhongji decided to study and create a simple, easy-to-learn, convenient and fast computer Chinese character input method.

Since then, Zhou Zhongji has compiled the codebooks of 6763 national standard Chinese characters and 10000 popular traditional Chinese characters in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In order to make it easier for the public to master and use it, Zhou Zhongji decided to simply use the numeric keypad to input, and selected the 10 number keys from 0 to 9 to represent all Chinese character codes.

The coding work is very complicated, but someone asked how long it took Zhou Zhongji to code. He smiled and replied, "I don't know!" "This" don't know "is more of an incalculable meaning. 1992, with the support of Zhou Zhongji, Suzhou University established the information technology laboratory of vertical and horizontal Chinese characters, which later developed into a research institute. This is Zhou Zhongji's first R&D base in cooperation with Suzhou University.

1993, the first set of "vertical and horizontal Chinese character input software" came out. Its coding system is divided into four categories: radical, font, no radical and pen shape; Code selection principles are divided into single-word code selection and phrase code selection. In order to memorize the pen code conveniently, Zhou Zhongji chose the coding formula: one horizontal, two vertical, three point four forks, five squares, six corners, eight hundred and eighty-nine small, and all left hooks are zero. At the same time, in order to reduce duplicate codes, the methods of "radical, secondary radical" and complement code are adopted. After this software came out, it attracted people's attention.

Vertical and horizontal code is an innovation in coding concept, which combines numbers with shape codes and operates with one hand on the numeric keyboard. For beginners, you only need to remember the four formulas of pen code, plus the code selection rules of words and phrases. Generally, they only need to study for two hours to master the essentials.

Vertical and horizontal codes are not only easy to learn, but also fast to input. In the inter-school Chinese input competition for primary and middle school students held by the Hong Kong Computer Education Society in 2003, the "Final Speed Award" and the first, second and third place in the "full-court finals" for primary and junior high schools were won by the players of "Vertical and Horizontal Input Method".

For more than ten years, vertical and horizontal codes have been applied and popularized in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. The relationship between the stroke shape and the number code is memorized by the formula of "one horizontal, two vertical, three points and four horizontal, five square, six seven angles, eight hundred and eighty-nine, and the left hook is all zeros". The maximum length of a word is 4 yards, and the maximum length of a phrase is 6 yards. The software stores more than 20,000 words and 250,000 phrases. As early as the early 1980s, Mr. Zhou became interested in computers. An Zijie, an old friend who went to Hong Kong with Mr. Zhou from Shanghai, gave him a Chinese typewriter he invented. At that time, the concept of "one country, two systems" had been put forward for two years, and exchanges between Hong Kong and the mainland of China had also been strengthened. At the same time, China, which is going to the world, urgently needs computerized Chinese and culture.

At that time, there were more than 200 ways to input Chinese into computers, such as Pinyin, Wu Bi Font and Cang Xie, but after many experiments, there were many inconveniences. Mr. Zhou has been thinking about how to simplify Chinese character input method. One day, when he looked up the dictionary, he was inspired by the four-corner number retrieval method proposed by Wang (1888-1979)1935, so he began to explore and think for five years. He compiled a simplified code book of vertical and horizontal Chinese character input method, with the help of a dean of Malaysia University of Science and Technology, in 1989. However, it is not easy to further test and popularize. Mr. Zhou adopted the strategy of "combining distance and blooming everywhere". Go to Suzhou, which is far away from Hong Kong, to find partners, take Suzhou as the base to drive Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai, guide them to Hong Kong, and then expand at home and abroad.

In order to introduce the vertical and horizontal Chinese character input method into Hong Kong, Mr. Zhou organized Hong Kong people to visit and study on the spot in the name of Jiangsu and Zhejiang Association. In Hong Kong, Mr. Zhou organized many live performances and competitions. In August 2000, at the Hong Kong International Vocational Education Conference, Mr. Zhou invited mainland coding experts to perform live in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, Mr. Zhou Zhongji relied on social forces and made various efforts to make people know more about "vertical and horizontal", love it more and more, and use it more and more. According to Mr. Zhou, at present, the Hong Kong government, the Independent Commission Against Corruption, customs, libraries and other places are using vertical and horizontal codes, and senior officials in Hong Kong are also learning to use them.

The successful promotion of vertical and horizontal codes in Hong Kong and the Mainland has attracted worldwide attention.
