The line starts from Datong City in Shanxi Province in the north, runs through the central part of Shanxi Province from north to south, passes through Shuozhou City, xinzhou City, Taiyuan City, Jinzhong City, Linfen City and Yuncheng City in Shanxi Province, crosses the Yellow River in yongji city City, enters Weinan City in Shaanxi Province, and passes through Lintong to Xi 'an. The total length of the main line is 859km, the length of the main line in Shanxi is 706 km, and the length of the main line in Shaanxi is 153 km. The line passes through Jinnan area of Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces and the eastern part of Guanzhong Plain. The proportion of bridges and tunnels in the whole line accounts for about 78% of the total length of the line, and there are 29 stations, including 18 new stations and1existing railway stations under construction. The speed level of the line is 250 km/h, and the speed-up condition of 350 km/h is reserved.

The project was originally planned to use the Tongpu Railway Line 3 and Line 4 under construction from Datong to Yuanping in Shanxi Province. The new line will pass through Taiyuan, Jinzhong and Linfen, Yuncheng, Weinan and Lintong in Shanxi Province, and finally reach xi 'an. The total length of the line is 845km, including 713km newly built and132km under construction. After the change, the Datong-Yuanping Railway Passenger Dedicated Line will be built, with a total length of 147.438+05km. ..

After the completion of this line, the running time of Datong-Xi 'an passenger train will be shortened from 16 hours of ordinary trains to about 5.5 hours. Through the effective connection with beijing-zhangjiakou intercity railway, Zhangda Passenger Dedicated Line, Jida Passenger Dedicated Line, Shitai Passenger Dedicated Line, Xu Lan Passenger Dedicated Line and Xicheng Passenger Dedicated Line, the coverage of the rapid passenger transport network will be further expanded, and an efficient and convenient rapid passenger transport network will be formed from Shanxi and Shaanxi to all parts of the country. This will greatly shorten the time and space distance between the major cities in this region and all parts of the country, meet the growing passenger demand, and play an important role in promoting the sustainable development of local regional economy.

In the next few years, Shanxi Province will build a one-hour passenger transport circle from Taiyuan to Shijiazhuang. Close to Beijing, Xi 'an, Zhengzhou and other cities, forming a 3-hour passenger circle; It starts from Hohhot in the north and ends in Xuzhou in the south, forming a three-hour passenger transport circle.
