Guo Zuchao's scholarship and education.

Guo Zuchao's lifelong interest lies in learning and educating people. From the age of seven to his eighties this year, he has always enjoyed it and reached the state of forgetting myself. He believes that the joy of life lies in knocking on the door of science, and once you enter the hall of science, its pleasure is incomparable to any material enjoyment. He also believes that knowledge is not private, it has been accepted by predecessors and must be given to future generations. With knowledge, we must first make it beneficial to the country and the people and benefit mankind. Science should be handed down from generation to generation, and the latecomers will come to the fore, so that the scientific cause can be carried forward day by day. It is under the guidance of this thought that he has never deviated from writing books, conducting scientific practice and preaching all his life.

Guo Zuchao has profound knowledge and deep roots, integrating mathematics, medicine, pedagogy and preventive medicine, and went abroad for further study, which laid a solid foundation for his career achievements. What makes fellow scholars and future generations admire especially is his rigorous academic attitude and meticulous scientific style. He not only used it to restrain himself, but also used it to educate people. For example, when organizing the compilation of the textbook "Military Health Statistics", he put forward the requirements of 12 based on his previous compilation experience, and there were clear and specific provisions from the ideological and scientific nature of the textbook to charts, symbols, formulas and words, and all unqualified materials were returned for rewriting and plagiarism. He often said: "Strict scientific style is cultivated in peacetime."

Guo Zuchao's work efficiency is amazing, and it hasn't decreased slightly until he was 18. In addition to daily teaching, scientific research, guiding graduate students and advanced students, he also has to complete a lot of writing, peer review and consultation. According to the statistics of 1980- 1982 3F, Guo Zuchao edited four books and reviewed 176 papers, reaching 2.5 million words. Some manuscripts should be revised word for word, while others should be rewritten in large paragraphs. Guo Zuchao always carefully examines the book, never gets tired of perfunctory, returns it to the author or editorial department as scheduled, and never presses the manuscript. Some manuscripts were scribbled, and he also carefully examined them, writing the review comments neatly.

Guo Zuchao gave a warm reception to all inquiries and answered them patiently. Whenever someone comes to consult, he always stops what he is doing at once, but he is not sad. He believes that receiving consultation is an unshirkable responsibility as a people's teacher, and this discussion has always benefited both sides. It is an excellent opportunity for people to send their knowledge home to increase their knowledge and absorb nutrition. When he is being consulted, he always asks the other party in detail about the relevant professional details, even the practice of the experiment, how to record the data and so on. It was not until he found out the essence of the question that he began to give an answer. "Be a student first, then a teacher" is another motto of Guo Zuchao. All those who consulted him praised his virtues of modesty, sincerity and approachability. People say that discussing problems with Professor Guo is like bathing in a warm room, which is really a spiritual enjoyment. Guo Zuchao didn't do this reluctantly, which is inseparable from his noble moral cultivation and ideological foundation.

Guo Zuchao enjoys a high academic reputation, but he attaches great importance to the development of academic democracy, discusses issues with others on an equal footing, and never pretends to be an authority. 1980, Guo Zuchao published the article "Statistical Processing of Angle Data in Medical Research-Calculation Method of Normal Values of EEG Rising Angle and Main Peak Angle" in a magazine, and some readers objected to this article. Guo Zuchao read the letter from the editorial department in detail, and found that although his views were limited, they also had reference significance. So while giving the correct answer, he wrote to the editorial department: "In order to encourage young comrades to dare to think and speak, it is recommended to publish." The editorial department of the magazine was instructed to publish future letters and replies at the same time, and specially wrote comments, warmly praising Guo Zuchao's noble character.

From 65438 to 0979, Guo Zuchao gladly served as the deputy editor-in-chief of the volume of Medical Statistics of China Medical Encyclopedia to support one of his early students in editing this book. In addition to personally writing a number of difficult items, he also fully assisted the editor-in-chief, carefully reviewed the manuscript, strictly examined the book, and deliberated word by word, not even letting go of a punctuation mark. At many editorial boards, Guo Zuchao always uses his modest and prudent attitude, learning from others' style and the spirit of being brave in exploration to make the seminars express their opinions and achieve centralization and unification. For controversial and difficult questions, he always listens to others' opinions carefully first, and then carefully consults the literature. He put forward his own views after careful consideration, well-founded and measured. Guo Zuchao is recognized as a respected elder in everyone's mind, but he never oppresses others by force, nor does he agree with others. But always seek truth from facts, sincerely express their views, and always discuss with the members of the editorial board as an ordinary member. Thanks to his exemplary role and the joint efforts of the editor-in-chief and all members of the editorial board, this editorial board composed of 1 1 people has formed a serious and responsible situation, speaking freely, reaching a consensus and being lively. We respect each other and learn from each other's strengths. We are a group full of vitality, unity and cooperation. Even the editorial comrades of a publishing house said with emotion, "It is really rare to have a harmonious atmosphere like yours."

A late colleague of Guo Zuchao once commented on him: "Professor Guo's success depends not on genius, but on diligence, seriousness, perseverance and modesty." This makes sense.

Guo Zuchao was born in poverty since childhood and suffered from the indifference of the old society. He wanted to serve his country, but he didn't get it. 1April 23, 949, Nanjing was liberated. As a China native, Guo Zuchao felt proud for the first time. He deeply felt that it was the fire of revolution that opened his conscience. He said emotionally: "Scientific workers believe in truth, and there is only one truth-only the * * * production party can have a new China." At the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, under the cordial education and training of the Party organizations, Guo Zuchao realized that the strength of individuals is insignificant, and only by following closely with the Party can intellectuals give full play to their talents and serve the socialist construction. Based on this idea, Guo Zuchao is energetic, active, closely related to the organization and making rapid progress. His behavior set an example for some intellectuals who were still watching at that time. It can be said that Guo Zuchao did everything possible during this period. He is introverted, but he takes an active part in social activities. Since 195 1, he has served as the chairman of the hospital trade union, initiated the life statistics of residents in the five districts of Nanjing and became one of the national pilots. 1956, Guo Zuchao joined the China * * * Production Party. At that time, party member was rare among professors. He set himself five rules: first, life is not special, no matter where you go, what you eat, what I eat, where you live, where I live; Second, be sincere, approachable, treat people equally, and don't put on the shelf of a professor; Third, speak in a popular way, don't chew upon words, and don't say things that the masses don't understand; Fourth, respect others, behave generously, be a student first, and then be a teacher; Fifth, learn from the strengths of others, especially the advanced ones. He has been faithful to this for decades. Guo Zuchao has closely linked himself with the great cause of the Party, and what he often thinks about in his mind is how to work for the Party more and better. He often said: "As long as I can do something useful for the people and play a screw role in medicine, this is my greatest pleasure." At one time, Guo Zuchao paid the monthly membership fee of 100 yuan, and also paid most of the membership fee. At that time, Guo Zuchao was already a famous professor in China, and his income was relatively rich, but he still lived a very frugal life as always.

During the Cultural Revolution, many old experts were persecuted, and so was Guo Zuchao. In those dark days, his firm belief in the party never wavered, nor did he lose his confidence in life and persistent pursuit of his career. In that harsh environment, Guo Zuchao still wrote the paper "Some Dialectical Problems in Medical Statistical Methods", which showed a real scientist's tenacious desire for knowledge and the courage to seek truth!

Guo Zuchao is now over 80 years old, still struggling for his ambition. Looking back on his life, it seems that there are no magnificent moves and no earth-shattering heroic achievements. It's just that he devoted all his energy and talents to medical education and science in China. Guo Zuchao, who people are familiar with, used to wear a gown, then a cloth, and then a military uniform. There was a cup of tea, a pen, a stack of papers and some books on the table. He goes to work on time every day and never comes late or leaves early for no reason. At school during the day and at home at night, there are three working intervals every day, from Monday to weekend, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, 1934 to 1949, 1949 to today. There is no rest day on his calendar. Only be yourself, divide your books, be down-to-earth, be conscientious, have no vanity, be neither humble nor supercilious, be strict with yourself, be lenient with others, be open and aboveboard, be modest and prudent, be consistent in words and deeds, and be consistent in appearance. He is versatile, but open-minded; I don't want personal comfort, let alone fame and fortune. I want to do my best for the people. In short, he has done everything he can and is worthy of the party and the people! In ordinary life, he is indifferent to luxury, personal fame and fortune, and truly reaches the realm of refinement. The so-called "not indifferent, not calm, not far", Guo Zuchao gave it a new meaning with his words and deeds!
