PHD (Doctor of Philosophy): This is the most common doctorate in Britain. Its characteristic is that there are no lectures, and the whole doctoral period is purely academic research, which usually takes three to four years to complete. Three years' supervised study+one year's completion and further study, so that I can graduate as soon as two years. This doctorate can also be a traditional doctorate.
MPhil (Master of Philosophy): This is another research-oriented master's degree, which usually involves independent research and submission of papers. MPhil is a master's degree applied for separately, but it can be regarded as the starting point for pursuing a doctoral degree, providing students with the foundation of research skills and knowledge. After graduation, students need to apply for a doctorate. Some schools have adopted the model of MPhil and PhD as projects. At the beginning, students enter the school as candidates for MPhil degree, and after successfully passing the upgrading seminar, they become doctoral students (if they can't continue their PhD studies, they can also apply to their tutors for MPhil degree). This model provides students with greater flexibility and opportunities. Students can get their degrees at an early stage and have more time and opportunities to prove their abilities and values in the follow-up research.
