What's the difference between notarization and authentication?

The difference between notarization and authentication is actually very simple. Take the notarization of birth medical certificate as an example.

Notarization is to prove the authenticity and legality of the birth medical certificate held by the parties, and authentication is to prove the authenticity of the notary's signature and seal on the notarial certificate.

In other words, they are aimed at different objects and belong to different programs.

And the processing place and processing time are different.

Notarization needs to be handled in the notary office, which usually takes about 5 working days;

There are two steps in authentication, namely, the authentication of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the authentication of the embassy.

The certification of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs needs to go to the Foreign Affairs Office of the province, which generally takes about 7 working days;

Embassy certification needs to be done in embassies and consulates in China, the destination country, which generally takes about 15 working days.
