Suzhou brocade began in the Five Dynasties and developed quite prosperously in the Song Dynasty. Especially after Song Gaozong went south, the political and cultural centers of the whole country moved to the south of the Yangtze River. In order to meet the special needs of artistic development, Suzhou brocade has a very beautiful variety of painting and calligraphy mounting.
Among them, there are more than 40 varieties such as green house brocade, purple flower brocade and persimmon turtle back brocade. These beautiful tapestries have been preserved with paintings and calligraphy. Therefore, later generations called it Jin Song, hence its name and spread to this day. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, Suzhou Song Jinye was dying, with only 12 looms left. After the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), production gradually recovered. 1959, Song Brocade Fabric Factory was established, adding antique decorative products such as fragrant ribbons, colored towels and ribbons, as well as antique brocade imitations unearthed in Huqiu. The electric silk loom replaced the pedal hand pull. Since then, Suzhou brocade has realized mechanized operation and its output has greatly increased.

As well as Japan, East Asia, Europe, the United States and other countries, some merchants inexplicably came to place orders, and Suzhou Jin Song, the quintessence of Chinese culture, was playing again. Colorful Suzhou embroidery is known as a pearl in China's art treasure house. Suzhou embroidery originated in Wuxian County, Suzhou, and spread to Wuxi, Changzhou, Yangzhou, Suqian and Dongtai in Jiangsu Province. Jiangsu has fertile land, mild climate and developed sericulture and silk, and has been the hometown of splendid mountains and rivers since ancient times.
Superior geographical environment, gorgeous brocade and colorful silk thread have created favorable conditions for the development of Suzhou embroidery. According to Liu Xiang's Shuo Yuan in the Western Han Dynasty, as early as the Spring and Autumn Period more than 2,000 years ago, Wu had already made clothes with embroidery. During the Three Kingdoms period, Sun Quan, the king of Wu, ordered Zhao Dacheng's sister to embroider maps of various countries, and embroidered the Wuyue River and Haicheng Line on silk. It is said that all ethnic groups are embroidered on a piece of brocade. According to "The Secret Collection of Qing Dynasty", Song people embroidered with fine needle and thread, with one or two threads as thin as hair pins. Exquisite color design is dazzling. Mountains and rivers are far from interesting, and the hidden characters in pavilions are vivid, flowery and graceful. The best is better than painting. It can be seen that the art of Suzhou embroidery in Song Dynasty has reached a quite high level.
By the Ming Dynasty, Jiangnan had become the center of silk handicraft industry. Wu Pai, represented by Tang Yin (Bohu) and Shen Zhou, appeared in painting art, which promoted the development of embroidery. Embroidery artists combine painting to reproduce, and the famous works embroidered are vivid and lifelike, so it is called painting with needles, and the craft is exquisite. From then on, this dream began. There is also a kind of painting embroidery, which belongs to high-grade appreciation and is called boudoir embroidery. Some excellent embroidery works, such as He Cao in Wuxian, He Guanguan in Wujiang and He Wenhua in Wuxi, were once famous. Especially in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, in the trend of western learning spreading to the east, Suzhou embroidery also showed signs of innovation.
During Guangxu period, Shen was a highly skilled embroidery artist and was quite famous in Suzhou embroidery field. She integrated the characteristics of western painting and the simulation of gods into embroidery, creating a new kind of simulated embroidery. In the 30th year of Guangxu (AD 1904), Cixi celebrated her seventieth birthday. Shen Xiu displayed eight works, including the Buddha statue, to celebrate her birthday. Cixi praised her greatly and wrote the words "longevity and blessing" for Shen and her husband Yu Jue. From then on, Shen changed his name to Shen Shou. Later, her work "Portrait of Italian Queen Elena" was presented to Italy as a national gift, which caused a sensation in the Italian government. Won the first prize in Panama-Pacific International Exhibition held in America, and the price was as high as 13000 USD.
When it was exhibited in America, it was unprecedented. Shen Shou's imitation embroidery is well-known at home and abroad, which has turned a new page for Suzhou embroidery. Under her advocacy, Suzhou, Nantong, Danyang, Wuxi, Changshu and other places in Jiangsu held embroidery workshops, embroidery engineering colleges, embroidery trade unions and so on. She has been to Suzhou, Beijing, Tianjin, Nantong and other places and cultivated a new generation. Famous painters at that time included Tang, Li, Cai Qunxiu and Jin Jingfen. Their works have won international awards in Du Lang International Expo (A.D.191), Panama-Pacific International Expo (A.D. 19 15), Belgian International Expo (A.D. 1930) and other traditional China crafts.
In the early 1930s, Yang Shouyu, director of embroidery engineering in Danyang Normal Women's Vocational School, initiated criss-crossing and layered embroidery, which enriched and improved the expressive ability of Suzhou embroidery. Since the early 1950s, the creation of Suzhou embroidery artists has opened up a new and broad world. Suzhou, Nantong, Changzhou, Wuxi, Yangzhou, Dongtai and other places have successively set up embroidery research institutions or factories, so that embroidery artists can devote themselves to research and creation with peace of mind. The lost art has been excavated, summarized, perfected and developed, which makes the ancient Suzhou embroidery art glow again.
