In 2004, China Football Association officially launched the "China Football Association Super League" on the basis of summarizing the ten years of professional football in China, in order to further enhance the competitive level and brand of professional football in China. There were 12 teams in the first session of the Super League, and the promotion and demotion system was suspended in the first two sessions.

In 2006, the relegation system was resumed (however, due to the dissolution of Guancheng in Sichuan in 2006, the merger of Shanghai Shenhua and Shanghai Liancheng in 2007, the withdrawal of Wuhan Optics Valley in 2008, the withdrawal of Dalian Shide in early 20 13, and the dissolution of Tianjin Tianhai in 2020, only "relegation" was implemented in these five years, that is, two teams were promoted from the first division.
