When the MTRC was established in 1975, its mission was to build and operate a railway system for Hong Kong, and to operate it on prudent commercial principles to meet the public transport needs of Hong Kong. At that time, the Hong Kong Government was the sole shareholder.
In June 2000, MTRC was registered as a limited company, and then the Hong Kong SAR government sold 23% of the shares of MTRC, which was listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong on October 5, 2000.
On February 2, 2007/KLOC-0, the network operated by the Kowloon-Canton Railway Company, which is wholly owned by the government, was merged by the subway company. The Chinese name of MTR Corporation Limited was changed to MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL). This also marks a new milestone in the development of Hong Kong's railways.
The merger will not only bring more efficient railway services and more attractive fares to passengers, but also bring opportunities for the company to develop local and overseas business. The merged MTR has nine railway lines covering Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. At the same time, the company provides light rail and shuttle bus services to communities in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long.
The Airport Express Line operated by MTR provides high-speed railway lines for passengers, connecting the city center with Hong Kong International Airport and Asia International Expo, a large convention and exhibition center in Hong Kong. The company's intercity passenger service provides convenient railway transportation for passengers traveling to and from Guangdong Province, Beijing and Shanghai. The day-to-day business of the Company is managed by the Chief Executive Officer and the Executive Committee, and reports to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is headed by a non-executive chairman, and other members include local business and community leaders and government representatives.
MTR Corporation is committed to maintaining the highest standards of corporate ethics and integrity, and all employees abide by the code of conduct in their daily work to consolidate the integrity culture within the company.
