The production status, market demand and development trend of ethanolamine at home and abroad are introduced. The gap between China and foreign advanced level is pointed out. The average production scale of ethanolamine in the United States is 140 kt/a, while the largest scale in China is only10 kt/a. According to the present situation, the development ideas of ethanolamine in China are put forward.
Ethanolamine is the most important product in amino alcohol. Monoethanolamine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine, as one of the important fine organic chemical raw materials, are mainly used in industry at present. Ethanolamine is mainly used as surfactant, synthetic detergent, petroleum additive, synthetic resin and rubber plasticizer, accelerator, vulcanizing agent and foaming agent, as well as gas purification, liquid antifreeze, printing and dyeing, medicine, pesticide, construction, military industry and other fields. 1. Production Status In 2000, the world's ethanolamine production capacity was about 1 100 kt, mainly concentrated in industrialized countries such as the United States, Western Europe and Japan, accounting for about 90% of the world's total production capacity. Table 1 shows the main producers and production capacity of ethanolamine in the world.

The development of ethanolamine in the world shows the following characteristics: First, the production of ethanolamine in the world is mainly concentrated in several large companies in the United States, Western Europe and Japan, and the production capacity of these three countries and regions accounts for about 87% of the world's total production capacity, while the production capacity of only three major companies, namely Union Carbide Company, Huntsman Company and BASF Company of Germany, accounts for 56.3% of the world's total production capacity; Second, the production scale tends to be large. The average scale of ethanolamine in the United States is as high as 140 kt/a, Germany is 58 kt/a, and the production scale in other countries is also above 20 kt/a; Thirdly, the ethanolamine plant is basically built together with the raw material ethylene oxide plant, mainly considering the convenience of raw material supply and product transportation, ensuring raw material supply and reducing costs, and increasing the competitiveness of the plant.
China's ethanolamine developed earlier, but for many years, the production scale was small and the product quality was poor, and the required products mainly depended on imports. Since Fushun and Jilin successively introduced two sets of foreign technologies and equipment in the late 1990s, China's ethanolamine industry has got rid of the overall backwardness and embarked on the road of stable development. At present, there are about 20 domestic ethanolamine production enterprises with a total production capacity of about 40 kt/a. See Table 2 for the main production enterprises and production capacity. The output of ethanolamine 200 1 in China is about 14 kt. Many small and medium-sized enterprises are unable to compete with large enterprises and foreign products because of their small production scale, poor product quality and high production cost, and most of them are in a state of suspension or semi-suspension, facing the fate of being eliminated. Domestic ethanolamine products are not completely self-sufficient, and a large number of ethanolamine products need to be imported every year. From 1998 to 2000, the import of ethanolamine in China was 2 1.4 kt, 13.4 kt and 26 kt respectively. 2. Market analysis 2. 1 foreign market analysis
In 2000, the output of ethanolamine in major countries and regions in the world was about 8 10 kt, and the operating rate was 75%. Generally speaking, the world supply capacity is greater than the market demand, but the production, demand and development are unbalanced, and the supply in some areas is in short supply. Foreign ethanolamine is mainly used in surfactant, herbicide, gas purifying agent, metal processing and cement production. Table 3 shows the supply and demand of ethanolamine in major countries and regions in the world, and Table 4 shows the consumption structure of ethanolamine in major countries and regions in the world.

As the downstream products of ethanolamine are mature industrial products, the growth rate of ethanolamine consumption will slow down in the next few years, which is expected to be 2% ~ 3%; In the future, the United States will still be the main exporter, and ethanolamine exports are mainly Japan, Southeast Asian countries and South America.
The average annual growth rate of ethanolamine consumption in western Europe in recent ten years is about 4. 1%. In western Europe, ethanolamine is basically self-sufficient with a small amount of export, and the import and export trade is mainly carried out in some countries in western Europe. It is estimated that the demand for ethanolamine in western Europe will grow at an average annual rate of about 3% in the next few years.
There are two main companies producing ethanolamine in Japan. Since 1990s, the consumption of ethanolamine in Japan has maintained a steady trend, with an average annual growth rate of 1.990-2000 and 1.65%. The domestic production of ethanolamine in Japan depends largely on the export volume. Japan mainly imports triethanolamine, 90% of which comes from the United States. The export volume of ethanolamine in Japan exceeds the import volume, and it is mainly sold to China, South Korea and Singapore. It is predicted that the demand growth rate of ethanolamine in Japan will remain at a low level in the next few years, with an average annual growth rate of about 2%.
In Asia (except Japan), especially in China, South Korea, India and some Southeast Asian countries, the demand for ethanolamine has increased rapidly in recent years and has become the main import area of ethanolamine in the world. There is only one company in Korea that produces ethanolamine, which is mainly used to produce polyurethane. 1990-2000 The average annual growth rate of ethanolamine consumption in Korea is about 10%, among which surfactants and polyurethane are the most important consumption areas, and ethanolamine in Korea is mainly used.
There is no ethanolamine production facility in Taiwan Province Province of China, and ethanolamine products mainly depend on imports, mainly from the United States, Germany and Japan.
There are many ethanolamine production facilities in India, but they are generally small in scale, mostly thousands of tons. In recent years, the demand for ethanolamine in India has increased rapidly, and the domestic demand is in short supply, mainly imported from Western Europe.
Due to the rapid growth of demand for ethanolamine downstream products in Asia, especially in East Asia and South Asia, there is a good development space and potential. Some enterprises plan to invest in new factories in this area. For example, Union Carbide plans to build a new ethanolamine plant with a production capacity of 75 kt/a in Malaysia.
2.2 domestic market analysis
In 2000, the consumption of ethanolamine in China was about 40 kt, accounting for about 3 1% of surfactant, 2 1% of pharmaceutical industry, 8% of gas purification 1% of antifreeze additive, 6% of metal cleaning and processing, and 23% of others. Table 5 shows the supply and demand of ethanolamine in China.

(1) surfactant
The biggest consumption field of ethanolamine is surfactant. Ethanolamine can not only be directly used as surfactant, but also be combined with many acids to synthesize important common surfactants, such as alkanolamide, dodecyl benzene sulfonyl triethanolamine and so on. Surfactants are used in detergent, chemical industry and other fields. In 2000, the consumption of ethanolamine in the field of surfactants was about 12 kt, including monoethanolamine 1 kt, diethanolamine 8.8 kt and triethanolamine 2.2 kt. In recent years, detergents in China have developed rapidly, especially liquid detergents, so the demand for surfactants will increase steadily and rapidly. It is estimated that the average annual growth rate of ethanolamine demand for surfactants is about 6% from 2000 to 2005, and it will reach 15 kt in 2005.
(2) Pharmaceutical industry
Ethanolamine can synthesize many basic drugs, such as furazolidone, morpholine biguanide, ketoconazole, tetrazole, dipyridamole, taurine and so on. Most of these drugs have been mass-produced in China, especially taurine. In 2000, the pharmaceutical industry consumed about 8.5 thousand tons of ethanolamine. With the nationwide medical reform and the enhancement of people's health care awareness, the demand for ethanolamine will increase steadily, with an average annual growth rate of about 5% from 2000 to 2005, and the consumption of ethanolamine will reach 1 1kt in 2005.
(3) gas purification
Ethanolamine is mainly used as desulfurizer in gas purification, one is desulfurization of petroleum gas, and the other is desulfurization of synthetic gas. At present, many domestic refineries and large and medium-sized synthetic ammonia plants adopt ethanolamine desulfurization technology, and diethanolamine is the most efficient desulfurizer commonly used abroad. According to the statistics of Sinopec and PetroChina, the consumption of ethanolamine in refinery gas in China in 2000 was about 3. 1 kt, and that in synthesis gas and gas purification was about 1.0 kt. It is estimated that the average annual growth rate of China petrochemical industry demand is about 4% from 2000 to 2005, and the demand for ethanolamine in 2005 is 5.0 kt, of which diethanolamine accounts for about 70%.
(4) Synthetic resin industry
Ethanolamine can be used as catalyst and crosslinking agent in polyurethane industry. In 2000, the annual consumption of ethanolamine catalyst and crosslinking agent was about 4.2 kt. 2/kloc-0 At the beginning of the century, China's polyurethane industry will develop greatly, and large-scale production equipment will be introduced one after another, so the consumption of ethanolamine in polyurethane industry will increase greatly. It is estimated that the average annual growth rate from 2000 to 2005 is about 10%, and the consumption in 2005 is about 7.0 kt.
(5) Rubber processing
Triethanolamine is one of the important rubber processing AIDS. It is often used as vulcanization activator of non-carbon black reinforced compound in rubber processing, and also as dispersant and waterproof agent. Especially, triethanolamine is an indispensable additive when fillers with delayed vulcanization such as silica are used as reinforcing agents. Although the development of rubber and its additives industry has been slow in recent years, rubber processing additives have developed rapidly. In order to meet the demand of high-performance tires, silica, as a tire reinforcing agent, has become a major development trend of rubber and its tire industry. Therefore, the demand for ethanolamine in rubber processing industry is increasing rapidly. In 2000, the consumption of triethanolamine was about 2.4 kt, and it is estimated that the average annual growth rate will be about 8% from 2000 to 2005, and the demand will increase to about 3.5% in 2005.
(6) Textile industry
In textile industry, ethanolamine is mainly used as textile finishing agent, softener, emulsifier and textile auxiliary agent to produce fluorescent whitening agent VBL. At present, ethanolamine is mainly used to produce fluorescent whitening agent VBL, which is a traditional fluorescent whitening agent. At present, China has produced a large number of products and exported a considerable number of products. In the future, the development of VBL will not be too great, and the consumption of ethanolamine will not change much. Other textile auxiliaries will have a bright future. At present, China is the largest producer of synthetic fibers in the world, and joined the WTO at the end of 20001. China's textile industry is facing an unprecedented good development opportunity. China's textile industry is bound to develop in a high-grade and large-scale direction, and there will be a great demand for textile auxiliaries such as fabric finishing agents and softeners. Therefore, in the future, the consumption of ethanolamine in the textile industry is mainly in textile finishing AIDS and so on. In 2000, the consumption of ethanolamine in China's textile industry was about 2.6 kt. It is predicted that the demand for ethanolamine in the textile industry will increase by about 5% in 2000-2005 and reach 3.5 kt in 2005.
(7) metal cleaning
Ethanolamine is widely used in metal cleaning because of its excellent emulsification and low corrosiveness. In 2000, the consumption of ethanolamine was about 1.6 kt, mainly diethanolamine, triethanolamine and their derivatives. Experts predict that the metal cleaning process in China will show a rapid growth trend in the future. Therefore, it is predicted that the demand for ethanolamine for metal cleaning will increase at an average annual rate of 4.5% from 2000 to 2005, and the demand in 2005 will be 2.0 kt.
(8) Other aspects
Ethanolamine is an important organic raw material, which can be used to synthesize many important fine chemical products, such as polyethylene polyamine, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and glyphosate.
Vinylamine is an important fine chemical raw material. At present, the domestic production capacity is about 4.0 kt/a, but it is difficult to compete with foreign products because of its small scale and high production cost. Therefore, domestic demand depends on imports, and the import volume is about 7.0 kt/a. Therefore, it is planned to build a 10,000-ton large-scale factory in China. Once the device is completed, it will consume 7.0 kt/a ethanolamine.
PVP is an important fine chemical, which is widely used in medicine, food and beverage, daily chemicals, coatings, textile printing and dyeing and other fields. In 2000, domestic demand was about 1.0 kt, and China's annual output was about 100 t, which was far from meeting domestic demand and mainly depended on imports. As a fine chemical with a wide range of uses, industry insiders predict that the market demand of PVP in China will maintain an average annual growth rate of more than 10% in the next few years. Recently, a plant with a capacity of 1000 tons is being built in China. It is estimated that the consumption of ethanolamine will be about 1.0 kt in 2005.
Diethanolamine can be used to produce glyphosate, an important pesticide. At present, glyphosate in China mainly uses glycine as raw material, and some foreign countries adopt diethanolamine method with low cost. At present, China is also developing, and several small-scale devices are running. According to industry estimates, the consumption of ethanolamine in 2005 was about 2.0 kt.
In addition, it is estimated that the consumption of ethanolamine in cement additives, veterinary drugs, aerospace, coatings and other fields will be about 2.5 kt in 2005.
To sum up, the domestic demand of ethanolamine in China will reach 50 ~ 57 kt in 2005. Domestic production capacity can't meet market demand. It is pointed out that ethanolamine is an important petrochemical raw material, even if the existing domestic production capacity is fully developed, there is still a certain gap compared with the demand, so there is still great development potential of ethanolamine in China, and the following suggestions are put forward for the future development of ethanolamine industry in China.
In order to participate in global competition in the future, the capacity of newly built or expanded ethanolamine plants in China should be above 20 kt/a, so as to be competitive.
Vigorously develop downstream products of ethanolamine. Many downstream products of ethanolamine are important fine chemical intermediates and chemical products in short supply in China. Therefore, increasing the application and development of ethanolamine can not only meet the needs of domestic fine chemical industry, but also promote the rapid development of ethanolamine industry.
The production of ethanolamine has certain requirements for raw materials, and foreign ethanolamine plants are basically built together with raw material ethylene oxide plants. At present, there are many ethylene oxide gaps in China, and a large number of ethylene oxide are imported every year. Therefore, China should also build large-scale ethylene oxide plants in areas with good industrial base, so as to reduce the production cost of raw materials, increase the competitiveness of ethanolamine plants, avoid market risks and meet the challenges of foreign products.
