What is an ODT file?

ODT (OpenDocument Format) is a standard file format based on XML, which is set for electronic files such as spreadsheets, charts, presentations and word processing files.

Its specification was originally developed by Sun Microsystems, and its standard was developed by Oasis Open Document Format for Office Applications (Open Document) TC (also known as OASIS ODF TC).

Opendocument format tries to provide a solution to replace proprietary patent file format, so that organizations or individuals will not be locked by manufacturers because of file format.
