On August 26, 1980, the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was established. In August 1981, the cultural relics team of the Guangdong Provincial Museum went to Shenzhen and, together with staff from the Shenzhen Municipal Library and other units, carried out a cultural relics survey across the city, conducted archaeological excavations at some sites and ancient tombs, and unearthed and collected a large number of cultural relics. In order to collect and study these cultural relics and display the history and culture of Shenzhen, on October 17, 1981, the Shenzhen Municipal Establishment Committee approved the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Museum, which was later renamed the Shenzhen Museum and the Shenzhen Museum in early 2008.
2. Venue Construction
1. Ancient Art Museum
It is located on the north side of Shennan Avenue. The infrastructure project was completed in 1982 and was listed as one of the eight major cultural facilities in Shenzhen and a key construction project. It was completed and opened in November 1988. It covers an area of ??37,000 square meters, with a total construction area of ??18,400 square meters and an exhibition building area of ??8,000 square meters. It was temporarily closed in August 2015 for maintenance and renovation.
2. History and Folklore Museum
It is located in Area A of Shenzhen Civic Center. The construction land is 12,500 square meters and the construction area is 33,600 square meters. It was completed and opened in December 2008. The exhibition building has 3 floors, including 5 basic displays and 2 special exhibition halls, with an exhibition area of ??more than 10,000 square meters. The underground floor is a cultural relics warehouse. In addition, the exhibition building also has supporting service facilities such as a multi-functional lecture hall, a VIP room, a tea house, and a souvenir shop.
3. Dongjiang Guerrilla Headquarters Former Site Memorial Hall
It is located at No. 13 Nanqing Street, Luohu District, covering an area of ??240 square meters and a construction area of ??794 square meters. The old site is a Shenzhen municipal cultural relic protection unit. It was placed under the management of the Shenzhen Museum in 2012. It was renovated and opened to the public in December 2017.
4. Shenzhen Reform and Opening Up Exhibition Hall
It is located at No. 184 Fuzhong Road, Futian District (the fourth and fifth floors of the southern area of ??Shenzhen Contemporary Art and Urban Planning Museum), with an exhibition area of ??6,300 square meters. m, and will be open to the public from November 8, 2018.
3. Establishment and Functions
The Shenzhen Museum is a public welfare unit fully funded by the municipal finance and affiliated to the Shenzhen Municipal Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau. In November 2004, the archaeological team became independent from the museum and established the Shenzhen Cultural Relics and Archaeological Appraisal Institute as an independent legal entity. In January 2010, the Shenzhen Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center was placed under the jurisdiction of the Shenzhen Museum. Currently, there are 15 departments and offices in the museum. There are currently 135 employees on staff, including 79 intermediate and above professional and technical personnel. The current curator is Ye Yang, and the deputy curators are Guo Xuelei, Cai Huiyao and Du Juan.
At the end of 2014, the Shenzhen Museum established a board of directors and became one of the first museums in Guangdong to implement the reform of the board of directors system.

The History and Folklore Museum of Shenzhen Museum currently has 5 basic displays.
