On June 22nd, 2020, the Department of Science, Technology and Education of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced in official website that two new corn varieties with insect resistance and herbicide tolerance had obtained safety certificates. These two maize varieties are "DBN 9936" developed by Beijing Dabeinong Biotechnology Co., Ltd. and "Shuangkang 12-5" jointly developed by Hangzhou Ruifeng Biotechnology Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang University. These two maize varieties are new maize varieties resistant to corn borer and glyphosate herbicide, which are obtained by transferring insect-resistant gene (Bt Cry 1Ab) and glyphosate-resistant gene G 10evo(EPSPS) into maize.
"DBN 9936" is a new insect-resistant and herbicide-resistant transgenic corn variety bred by Beijing Dabeinong Biotechnology Co., Ltd., a holding subsidiary of Beijing Dabeinong Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd., and it is a new transgenic corn variety bred by transferring insect-resistant gene (Bt Cry 1Ab) into corn. It is one of the two new maize varieties that have obtained safety certificates since 10. Many field experiments over the years have proved this point. This variety has good resistance to the main LEPIDOPTERA pests that harm corn, such as corn borer, oriental armyworm, peach moth, cotton bollworm, armyworm Lloyd, millet gray borer, sorghum Chilo suppressalis, Lepidoptera Chilo suppressalis and so on. It also has a certain resistance to the current meadow moth pests, and can tolerate more than 4 times of glyphosate, which better solves the problem of insects and weeds that plague corn production and will provide efficient, safe and assured products for corn growers.
"Shuangkang 12-5" is a new insect-resistant transgenic maize variety bred by Hangzhou Ruifeng Biotechnology Co., Ltd., a joint-stock company of Yuan Longping Agricultural High-tech Co., Ltd., which is an insect-resistant and glyphosate-resistant gene (Cry 1Ab/Cry2Aj) and a transgenic maize variety. Obtained the safety certificate of new varieties of genetically modified corn issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. After years of experiments, it has been proved that this variety has good resistance to the main Lepidoptera pests such as corn borer, cotton bollworm and oriental armyworm. It also has good resistance to glyphosate herbicide, and also has certain resistance to meadow moth invading southwest China and yellow areas. At present, it has obtained patents in China and the United States.
The introduction of two new transgenic corn varieties "DBN 9936" and "Shuangkang 12-5" and their safety certificates will be the last major technical upgrade of corn, which can reduce the pesticide consumption by 80% and increase the yield by 20 ~ 50%, which not only reduces the investment in pest control, but also improves the herbicide tolerance of corn and reduces the input cost and herbicide risk. The comprehensive income of corn planting per mu should be increased by at least 100 yuan.
Two new transgenic maize varieties "DBN 9936" and "Shuangkang 12-5" are mainly suitable for planting in the main maize producing areas in East China and North China. According to the relevant laws and regulations, the production, management and processing of genetically modified corn seeds need to obtain the administrative license granted by the relevant agricultural administrative departments. If successful, these two kinds of genetically modified corn will be planted in a large area in China in the next two years, especially in the main corn producing areas in East China and North China. If all goes well, China will plant a large number of genetically modified corn in five years, so that ordinary corn will have no competitive advantage, corn output will be greatly improved, and the problem of pesticide residues in corn will be solved.
