2002 ~ 2005: the growth stage of organic light-emitting diodes. At this stage, people will be widely exposed to products with organic light-emitting diodes, including car monitors, PDA's, mobile phones, DVDs, digital cameras, digital video cameras, helmet microdisplays and household appliances. Products have officially entered the market, mainly in the field of traditional LCD, VFD and other displays. Passive driving, monochrome or multicolor display and panels below 10 inch are still the main products, but active driving, full color and panels above 10 inch have also been put into use. It is predicted that by 2005, the number of organic light-emitting diode displays for mobile phones will exceed 1. 1 100 million, accounting for 1.2% of the mobile phone market, and that for PDA will exceed 1.2%, accounting for 1.9% of the PDA market. OLEDs global sales will reach $765,438+400,000.
After 2005: the mature stage of organic light-emitting diodes. With the maturity of the industrialization technology of organic light-emitting diodes, organic light-emitting diodes will fully attack the display market and expand their own application fields, and their technological advantages will be fully tapped and brought into play.
It is preliminarily estimated that in addition to the traditional display field, organic light-emitting diodes will make great efforts in the following four application fields:
3G communication terminal
Compared with the current 2G communication, the most prominent change of 3G communication is the improvement of transmission rate, from simple voice and simple graphic data to high-quality voice data and multimedia data, and the corresponding communication terminal display must also change from monochrome display to full-color display, and from static graphic display to dynamic image display. At present, the display technologies that can meet the requirements and may be adopted are TFT-LCD and organic light emitting diode. Mobile phones using organic light-emitting diodes can work normally in sunlight and cold environment, with no viewing angle limitation, no tailing phenomenon in playing dynamic images, soft colors, low power consumption and low cost. Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that once the technology is mature and the production scale is relatively large, organic light-emitting diodes will surely become the mainstream of 3G communication terminal displays.
Wall-mounted TV and desktop computer monitors
Organic light emitting diodes have the characteristics of fast response, high brightness, wide viewing angle and high contrast, which are very suitable for display. More importantly, organic light-emitting diodes are very thin, even thinner than LCD, so the future OLED TV can be hung on the wall, no longer occupying indoor space. For desktop computers, the current trend is that the mainframe can be made smaller and smaller, while the size of the display is required to be larger and larger, and the CRT display with excellent display effect becomes more and more cumbersome and unsightly. Therefore, the organic light-emitting diode display with similar display effect to CRT display will surely become a strong competitor of desktop computer display with its ultra-thin advantages.
Military and special purposes
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are all solid-state devices, which have no vacuum cavity, no liquid components, are not afraid of vibration and are convenient to use. Coupled with the characteristics of high resolution, wide viewing angle and wide working temperature range, it will inevitably get close attention and wide application in the military field. On July 8, 2000 and September 8, 2006, eMagin Company was granted a development grant of US$ 20 million by the US Air Force for the development of high-brightness organic light-emitting diode microdisplay and helmet-mounted panoramic night vision goggles in the F- 15E fighter system. In addition to military use, organic light-emitting diodes can also be used in harsh environments where other display devices cannot be used, such as cold or strong vibration environment.
Flexible display
This is the "patent" of organic light-emitting diodes in all displays that have been applied and are being developed at present. If the organic light-emitting diode is based on a plastic substrate (or other soft material substrate) with a thickness of only about one millimeter, it will become a real flexible organic light-emitting diode (FOLD) without vacuum cavity and liquid components. The practicality of this display can be called a revolution of display, which greatly expands the application field of display and changes people's traditional concept of display. FOLED can be used for clothing decoration, handicrafts, signs and display, and can be used to make electronic newspapers that can be rolled and carried and have wireless data transmission function. Wonderful displays such as roll-up and portable TV are no longer dreams.
In a word, organic light-emitting displays with many advantages have broad prospects and will surely become an important display tool in the future and play an increasingly important role in people's lives.
