Yan' an is located in the north of Shaanxi province, in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, between 35 21' and 37 31' north latitude and 17 41' and 11 31' east longitude, in the central south of the Loess Plateau, 371 kilometers north of Xi' an. Yulin in the north, Xianyang, Tongchuan and Weinan in the south, Linfen and Lvliang in Shanxi across the Yellow River in the east and Qingyang in Gansu in the west.
