The concept of split conductor

Split conductor is a conductor erection method for EHV transmission lines to suppress corona discharge and reduce line reactance. China began to develop it in the early 1990s, and it was successfully developed in 1992, and obtained the national patent. Now it has been mass-produced and applied in some areas.

Split conductor is generally composed of 2-4 conductors with small cross-section in each phase, and the spacing between sub-conductors is 0.2-0.5m, which can increase the diameter of conductors. Compared with the large conductor with the same total cross section, the split conductor is not easy to corona and has higher transmission capacity.

Split conductor is mainly used for lines with voltage of 220kV and above. Generally, 220kV is divided into 2,500kV, 4,750kV is divided into 6, and1500kV is divided into 8.

Function of split conductor:

1. Using split conductor can improve the transmission capacity of the line.

Because compared with a single conductor, the split conductor can reduce the inductance of the transmission line, increase the capacitance of the transmission line, reduce its wave impedance to alternating current and improve the transmission capacity of the line. The research shows that the transmission capacity will increase when the conductor cross section of each phase is unchanged, and it will increase by 265,438 0% when each phase is split into two conductors and 33% when it is split into three conductors.

2. Limit corona and its related hazards.

Because there will be a strong electric field around the EHV transmission line, and the main insulating medium of overhead conductor is air, when the electric field intensity on the surface of conductor reaches a certain value, the air there may ionize into conductor and discharge. At night, a layer of green corona can sometimes be seen around the high-voltage line, which is essentially a tip discharge phenomenon in the high-voltage line.

3. Using split conductor can improve the economic benefit of power transmission.

Using split conductor technology can not only effectively reduce corona loss, but also use smaller cross-section conductor on EHV transmission line under corona condition and the same electric field intensity, so using split conductor will reduce transmission cost.

4. Improve the reliability of EHV transmission lines.

The stability of EHV transmission lines is very high, and the surface conditions and climate of the areas passing through are often very complicated. If a single wire is used, if it is defective somewhere, the probability of problems is greater. On the contrary, it is very unlikely that multiple wires will have defects at the same position, so the stability of the line can be improved by using split wires.
