Scientific research at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Sun Yat-sen University

The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Sun Yat-sen University has two key laboratories of the Ministry of Education: "Polymer Composites and Functional Materials" and "Bioinorganic and Synthetic Chemistry", and "High-Performance Thermoplastic Resin Matrix Composites"1 2 Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratories, "Synthesis and Separation of Heat-Sensitive Fine Chemicals" and "High-Performance Organic Polymer Optoelectronic Functional Films" 2 Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology R&D Centers, "Design, Synthesis and Application of New Polymer Materials" and "Environmental and "Energy Chemistry" 2 key laboratories of Guangdong universities. Together with Nobel Prize winner Professor Jean-Marie Lehn, we established the international cooperative research institution "Lehn Institute of Functional Materials".

Since its establishment, the institute has won 1 Chemical Science Award from the Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries, 3 second-class National Natural Science Awards, 1 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award for Outstanding Contribution, and 1 Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Achievement Award. 9 first-class awards and 29 second-class provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological achievement awards. The existing research teams include one innovative research group from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, two innovation teams from the Ministry of Education, and one innovation and entrepreneurship team introduced by Guangdong Province. In 2013, the total scientific research funding of the college reached 69.68 million yuan, including 27.42 million yuan from the National Natural Science Foundation; faculty of the college published 282 SCI-indexed papers, 83 ESI highly cited papers, and 78 authorized invention patents.

According to the data from the ESI database in December 2013, the chemistry discipline of Sun Yat-sen University ranks among the top 1‰ of the world and the top 10 domestically in terms of the total number of citations of papers in the ESI database. Sun Yat-sen University *** has 17 subject areas entered into the ESI database, among which the chemistry discipline ranks second in the total number of citations of papers and the average citation rate of papers.
