The source of the goths:
Goths are Germanic tribes. From the first century A.D., the Romans knew that they lived in the border area of the Danube. When the Huns moved from Central Asia to the west, the Goths fled the region because of pressure. They moved westward to Europe and crossed the Danube to escape the oncoming nomadic tribes. After the decline of Rome, the Goths in the early Middle Ages competed with other barbarians for the land left by the Western Roman Empire.
The only thing we know is that the Goths came from Glen Island in the Baltic Sea and split into two groups when crossing into Central Europe. Visigoths settled in present-day Romania in the second century AD. Ostrogoths continued to migrate eastward to the northwest coast of the Black Sea. In 376, under the oppression of Huns, Visigoths crossed the Danube from present-day Romania. The total number of men, women and children is about 60 thousand. They defeated the Roman army from Constantinople, once settled on the south bank of the Danube, and then advanced to Italy. In 409, the Visigoths plundered Rome under the leadership of King alaric, and then moved north to Gaul. The Romans had to give up Gaul in the southwest, and their power eventually expanded to the whole of Spain today.
Ostrogoths deserted under the rule of Huns, followed the route taken by his relatives (Visigoths) and entered Italy in the late fifth period. This invasion was instigated by the Eastern Roman Empire, because the Eastern Roman Empire wanted to consume the strength of these peoples and then rule Italy as a governor. Under the command of Theodoric (the king of Switzerland and the Balkans today), the Goths entered Italy in 488 and completely conquered Italy in 493.
After the death of Theodoric in 526, the kingdom didn't last long. In 536 AD, Byzantium sent an army under the command of General Belicha Russ to Italy under the pretext of competing for the right to the throne. Byzantium hoped to recapture Italy and restore the territory of the Roman Empire in the west. The war has been going on, and with plague and famine, rural areas have been seriously damaged. In 552, ostrogoths was finally defeated in Italy. In the late 6th century, Italy was invaded by the neo-barbarian Lombardi, ostrogoths was wiped out, and the survivors disintegrated into small groups.
The visigoths stayed in the kingdom of Spain for a long time. In the late 5th century, Frank Clovis drove the Visigoths from France to areas outside the Pyrenees. With the death of Clovis, his kingdom was also divided, which made the Visigoths breathe a sigh of relief. 7 1 1 year, the new threat comes from the south. Muslim troops crossed the sea from North Africa, and it took only four years to destroy the last Gothic kingdom.
The Goths were the first armed force that plundered Rome in history, and this alone made future generations unforgettable. And the order of the ancient world began to collapse in Europe. They appreciated the city of Rome and tried to protect it, so many Roman cultures were preserved. For example, the languages of modern Italy, Spain, Portugal and Romania are all derived from Latin, and then influenced by the residents in these areas, forming the languages of these countries, similar to Germanic languages handed down from Britain.
Gothic literary genre
Since the end of 18, some literary works have been classified as "Gothic novels" because of their same tone and style. For example, walpole's Chateau Otranto, ann radcliff's The Mystery of the Buddha in Iudor, Louis's Monk, and of course mary shelley's. These works are devoted to dealing with cruel passion and supernatural horror themes, while the background of novels is usually set in desolate castles or secluded monasteries. The protagonist (usually young boys and girls) is trapped in irresistible magical sexual desire, and the abuser (usually positive) begins an encounter that ends in death ... The sexual/gender relationship contained in these novels is strangely entangled in sacredness. Extreme erotic climax comes from the moment of disillusionment (that is, the "completion" of the ceremony). The religious system symbolizing patriarchy and the dark (negative) forces trying to surpass it, in a certain unspeakable level, actually share the pleasure mode of "love mating to death" in a cool way. In the contemporary horror fiction camp, taking anne rice's Chronicle of Vampires as an example, this paper reveals the complex interaction between homosexual lust and patriarchal mechanism.
Many Gothic novelists emerged in this period. They not only showed the dark side of human beings, but also challenged the orthodox thinking mode of society at that time. They were a mixture of horror and mystery. Typical characters in Gothic novels are vampires, such as Dracula in brian stock's works and descriptions in Edgar Allen's poems. Compared with the past, the description of vampire incarnation in Stoke's works has entered an opposite angle. Anne rice's Interview with Vampires and Poppy Z. Brite's Lost Soul are also the continuation of Stoke's style. ) In 1970s, punk, as a subculture, invaded the mainstream culture. Primitive punk comes from violence and powerful subversion. The appearance of "Happy Split", formerly known as "Warsaw", undoubtedly brought this punk movement full of destruction and anarchy into the post-punk era.
But the above is only one type, and there are many better works in history.
goth music genre
Representatives of early Gothic music such as Siouxsie, Banshee and Bauhaus. They are full of melancholy and world-weariness. Music is often cold and has a fine aesthetic feeling, but at the same time, a large number of discordant sounds that deviate from the melody line are used at the register level, which is an extreme contempt for all traditional music. At the level of lyrics and performance concept, it shows the desolation of life and love. From the rejection of the real state, and then pursue the strange pleasure of the soul abyss. On the stage, she/they appeared in extremely crazy costumes, such as dairy queen by Su Kexi, who was slightly sadistic, and peter murphy, the lead singer of Bauhaus, dressed herself as a glamorous bisexual vampire? This subversion and reversal of gender is also manifested in the fanatical obsession with the concept of theology (or devil). The Sisters of Charity was founded in 198 1, which was a rebellion against the musical consciousness of several men who loved the Middle Ages. Andrew Eldritch, the lead singer who was once described as "laughing and watching Rome burn into a pile of rubble", broke the religious stance of the Goethe Rock Orchestra. For us, cynicism is like the holy water of Catholics.
The early post-punk interpretation of life is often full of frustration and despair. For example, ian curtis, the lead singer of Glee, hanged himself in 1980. Those life-consuming notes have made JoyDivision an immortal classic and witnessed the whole low-key culture. His gloomy and isolated outlook on life hides gloomy genetic factors, which makes the whole post-punk culture dark gray and gloomy. In the 1980s, a pessimistic era was established in pedantic music, at least in the underground culture of Britain and Europe. In the independent music circle at that time, a large number of dark, morbid and strange bands emerged, and their music originated from the endless suppression and curse of life. For example, Mission, Everything About Eve, The Field of Naphilum, Cult and so on. These bands/musicians, regarded as desperate, evil and decadent, fled from the extreme destructive consciousness of punk to the introverted and dark world in the opposite direction-that is, the 1980s occupied the low-key music space and time of most rock music. The form and evolution of Gothic Rock in the British underground music circle is like a cult reaching out to a troll's palm when it comes to the earth. It attracts the audience through unimaginable and imaginative evil materials, which not only includes the unprecedented creativity of the Holy Spirit in the music field, but also includes the unprecedented stimulating visual experience given by visual modeling. Neutral identity modeling and heavy makeup are not the patent of neo-romantics. Goth seems to be the twin brother of neo-romantic personality, and it is the dark and morbid side behind gorgeousness. Now let's learn about the improved style of Gothic music and other related music genres. EBM (Electronic Body Music), which originated in Belgium, is an electronic, cold and black music. Influenced by electronic bands, such as the power plant band in the Klotlock movement in Germany.
As one of the founding bands of EBM, Front242 is famous for its low beat, depressing voice and militaristic commando costume. Klinik, Insekt, Dive, Click Click, A Split Second and later Suicide Commandos are all important bands of BM. Dive and Klinik use sonar noise to create a cold atmosphere in outer space. Suicide Commando incorporates more dance elements. Similar music styles are called Industrial in America and Canada, such as Front Line Assembly and Skinny Puppy. Their synthetic music and multi-level sound are very suitable for listening with headphones. The classic album assembled by the front line, the classic bums has causal grip (1990) and tactical nerve implantation (1992), which is worth collecting by everyone who likes EMB.
At this point, we haven't talked about Germany, which is now the important town of Gothic music. Many German bands are used to the music label DARKWAVE. Pitchfork project is the first German band to set foot in the field of Gothic music. Although their musical style has changed, they have always been a popular group. The first album "Dhyani" is also a classic, typical black music and critical lyrics. The members of Dion Lacaine's band have profound musical skills, and they have produced romantic songs such as Love Me to the End. These works have a certain sense of the Middle Ages. There are a large number of groups in Germany that keep their mother tongue when singing, such as Goethesbergen, and the name of the band speaks for itself. Their first three albums are like a trilogy, independent and interrelated. Lacrimosa, Tilo Wolf and other bands constantly tried to express their music by adding elements of metal music. Of course, we must understand this group. Their classic album is Die Prophet. The songs in the album are complicated and the lyrics are full of wisdom. Calvay Nada, a representative group of dark electronic music, sings alternately in German and Spanish. Their most distinctive feature is the bass of lead singer Breynaert, whose lyrics mostly involve political and social topics. From this point of view, this band is unique in the Gothic music kingdom.
Generally speaking, due to romantic plots, most bands in Germany are a combination of romantic songs and dark electronics. Nowadays, Gothic music is more and more diverse. For example, dark ballads are represented by Electric Current 93, Death in June, Solividis, Fire+Ice. The early C93 works were difficult to understand experimentally, and then David Tibet used his personal thinking to explore the direction of acoustic folk songs. Deathin June, the predecessor band of C93, has been controversial since the release of its debut album Nada, and they have even been accused of having a right-wing tendency. But what impressed us most about DIJ was the pagan sacrificial music. If you want to listen to this kind of music, please go to World Serpent, an excellent music label, and several bands mentioned above have released their works. By the way, there is another Italian group, Ordo Equitum Solis, which deserves our attention. Many Gothic bands have some medieval plots, and they combine medieval music with modern creative techniques. There are many such medieval groups in Germany, and music creators generally have a good background in classical music education. Famous orchestras include Qntal, Estampie, Freiburger Spielleyt and so on. This kind of music is more influential in Italy, such as Ataraxia and Camerata Mediolanense, who have made many excellent music works. This combination not only attracted the Gothic audience, but also attracted some classical music appreciators. The music of the goddess of the moon is hidden under a cloud, and Rosa Close absorbs the elements of festival music.
Of course, the styles of many bands are difficult to define. For example, Italy's Kirlian Camera has been changing every year for 20 years. However, the music theme of the French erotic dark electronic band Die FORM mostly involves S/M (sexual abuse), and each of their works brings us new surprises. The piano sound of another band from France, Collectiond' Arnell Andrea, is very distinctive and has become its own unique symbol. The works of In the Nursery Band, which is good at composing orchestral music, are very suitable as accompaniment in movies. In northern Europe, Sweden, the brand cold meat industry has produced many unique music works through years of efforts. Its bands are diverse in style, such as bloody experimental bands Brighter Death Now and Deutsch Nepal, atmosphere music group Raisond 'Etre, neoclassical protagonist, Yin Tian group Arcana and so on. Speaking of auditions, if you want to know more about auditions, please listen to such representative bands as Love is colder than death, Black Belt of Blue Girl and Stoa.
In the text of Gothic music, we can taste some imaginary sentences, involving religion, sex, death, despair, Christ and even unimaginable. These are all indispensable parts of Gothic music. Gothic rock covers music under a vague and ethereal external body, and everything is so mysterious. The style of Gothic rock can be said to be inherited from Joy Division, especially the hobby of raising the bass to the tonic position, which can not be completely shaken off until today's post-Gothic dynasty. Those depressing or distorted voices, bass, psychedelic guitar sounds, drums full of accusations, occasional screams like the Ghost Cry, music forms as heavy as a stone mill or as wild as falling apart, and the pale face of rock music: When you feel helpless about life, do you think of what is hidden behind it? Is it the isolation of soul? Is it the shadow of death? Or a human tragedy? Gothic rock is a kind of abstract expression based on unconsciousness rather than deliberate music subversion. Just like facing the gloomy winter climate, we are invaded by Gothic culture. In the dehumanized post-industrial modern society, we are pursuing an experience of life and death. There is also Barry's musical vision, except rock music, which has always been played in its true colors. In that pessimistic 1980s, Goth, a subculture living in the shadow of mainstream culture, had already crossed the boundaries of music and became a way of life, an attitude towards life and a black country pursued by Goth believers. After the vague 1990s, Gothic rock in the next century has been deconstructed into pieces and dismembered bodies, and the former Gothic patrons, Sisters of Mercy and Missionaries, have already abandoned their followers. However, in today's darkwave movement, under the death ballads, post-industrial noise, dark environment music and neoclassical formalism, we are still delighted to find that Goth is still the most vital and influential genetic gene in these underground cultures. In this revolution that broke through and shattered lust and gender, the so-called ideal model of "androgyny" of Goethe subculture became a beautiful weapon to crush imprisonment. See, the alien who was once regarded as the devil bravely got rid of the pale sky, rubbed off the angel's face and reached the eternal ruthless desire.
In the second half of the 20th century, it invaded the garden of non-mainstream music and became a very different branch of alternative music. If you are familiar with the historical context of new music, you will know that from the late 1970s to the 1980s, some bands were branded as "post-punk cool", "neoclassical" or "new hippie" respectively, and gradually merged into the future Gothic rock school.
If the early PostPunkCool's interpretation of life is depression and despair (such as the suicide of ian curtis, the lead singer of Glee), then the Sisters of Charity and their fellow bands such as The Mission, All about Eve, Fields of the Nephilem and The Cult may be based on various annoying customs in reality. In the "Church" album "God's own medicine", the first song "Wasteland" at the beginning of the story ironically sings "I still believe in God, but God no longer believes in me." This is a blasphemous declaration, which presents a shocking fact: for a long time, the power structure of God and man has been like the subject and object of sexual structure. After repeated scrutiny in this album, while overthrowing the belief, death is no longer a prop used by my father to intimidate, but an erotic utopia of traitors. Just like in the song "Love Me Until I Die", the peak of lust is beautifully laid out and is not fixed by the rigid "domination-submission" relationship; In other words, in the field of death (scarcity), the deadly negative passion is uncontrolled and suppressed, and its own aesthetics are developed.
Undeniably, "death" is almost a key word in the cultural level of Gothic rock music. When some conservative voices or anti-frustration forces try to use this to attack Gothic rock music and the secondary culture, we can see two kinds of responses: for example, the band "Christian Death" which deals with the feelings of darkness and pain. For them, the scenes of corruption, eschatology and destruction derived from death are enough to bring us close to the "ultimate climax". In some albums, such as Theater with Pain, Anger of Angels, and man in the iron mask, the focus of "Christian Death" is the beauty of this spasm near the critical point. One of them, Death Wish, ends with the lyrics that almost say "Satan is the kindest beast" with harsh music, which is tantamount to a severe mockery of the religious/patriarchal system's crude and standardized binary opposing values in various things.
Another reaction may be to quote what Poppy Z.Brite said in the preface of the anthology of vampire erotic novels "Love in Veins": "Gothic subculture" is not a praise or love for death, but a pure rejection and fear of death. In the process of exploring death, we are getting closer to death. This passage just explains why bands such as Nepali Forest Land, There are Trees, Will, Alicia and Morendos are immersed in the Macabrez image of "having sex with the dead king". In addition, death is not necessarily the lack of life. Following the clues of these creators, as well as the symbols and fables found in many pagan myths or evil spirits, death may be an exit close to the supernatural and non-human fields.
In the middle and late 1990s, the Gothic subculture not only blossomed in literary and musical creation, but also influenced the cultural ecology and identity of this "mixed ethnic group" (including women, gays and erotic border elements). In the revolution of lust and gender, the Gothic subculture's pursuit of the so-called ideal model "androgyny" is worthy of in-depth study, but it is also a beautiful weapon that helps to forcibly ban it, so that dissidents (others) who were once regarded as demons can get rid of a single paradise and taste their own desires and the bodies of angels.
What is Gothic?
Musically, nouns such as darkwave, gott-echno, dark-alternative and ambiente are all "Gothic Style".
Describe it in detail: fear of darkness, sadness about death, forbidden love, and aesthetic feeling brought by complete pain are all the dark sides of human spiritual world.
Then, if Gothic and music get married, Gothic is written casually. Gothic music has another explanation in the dictionary: it is a passionate mixture of various musical instruments, upholds the ultimate values of pessimism and despair, and reveals the mysterious and empty lyrics of the apocalypse. In the romantic movement around 1800, medieval culture gradually became the fashion in some people's eyes. Romanticism became the center of this cultural movement. Romanticists hope to transcend historical boundaries, some hope to return to the Middle Ages, some seek ideals from religion or mysticism, and some try to get answers from nature. They achieve their goals in different ways. In the whole romantic movement, Goth began to be associated with darkness, strangeness and ghosts. Romantic writers and Gothic writers like Byron, Shelley, Baudelaire and Wei Erlun are keen to show the dark side of human beings. Gothic sentiment is also clearly reflected in visual art, and painters like CasparDavidFriedrich show darkness and desolation. In architecture, neo-Gothic gradually became fashionable.
Some music is a magnetic field, and you will be attracted to it unconsciously. On the other hand, Goth is a black hole. Suck people in completely and sweep away your thoughts, rationality and even all subconscious things. It will release things that have been suppressed in the depths of human nature for too long, and let your emotions enter a white-hot madness. In that crazy state, people are unusually sober and calm. Happiness makes people superficial, and pain makes people profound. Even sink in pain. Sink, sink to the bottom of darkness. At that moment, you suddenly saw the world so clearly. You will never be disappointed to the end, because you finally despair.
Goth is a medieval spell. Darkness gave the Goths black eyes, but we used them to look for light. I don't know when the word Goth began to sneak into our lives like a ghost and quietly changed the world with its implied sharpness. Gothic films, such as The Lord of the Rings and Vampire Series, have greatly increased box office, and Gothic music is also recovering and developing rapidly. Even the fashion world has set off a gothic style. Calm reflection, the surge of Gothic wave is not only formed by market speculation, but also something worthy of our aftertaste and reflection.
Gothic culture has its own social and historical background from the rise of the Middle Ages to its comeback today. I think one thing that can't be ignored is that in the 20th century, the whole human race felt more and more profound doubts about the meaning of existence. This development of nihilism flaunts the spiritual characteristics of our times. The trend of theological revival in the development of western culture after World War II is proof. The return of Gothic trend is not so much to cater to people's psychological needs as to say that the public has consciously explored this subculture and further improved it to meet spiritual needs. My understanding of the essence and charm of this subculture is that it is a religion that believes in the aesthetics of darkness and death. This topic may be too big. Let me start with Gothic music.
From the early Gothic or post-Peng music, we can hear that rock and roll experienced several crazy baptisms. By the end of 1970s, punk's rough and simple roar had shown a declining trend and turned to depression and introspection. Probably, after the punk people vented all their dissatisfaction with society, they found that everything was still indifferent, so they began to despair deeply about the world. While the door of mainstream society is cold and closed, a mysterious black door engraved with medieval reliefs quietly opens to them. Punks broke into this forbidden area once called Goth with rebellious courage, and found the soil for survival and reproduction there. Goth, a ghost that has been lurking for centuries, has finally come to light, and the history of rock music has turned a new page.
Gothic music is obviously different from other branches of rock and roll from the cultural background since its birth. As a musical style rooted in romantic drama and Gothic literature in18th century, its repression of darkness, aesthetic and religious complex of death and almost evil pursuit of aestheticism make many people avoid it. Accordingly, many people who are sensitive to art, especially post-modern art, accepted it ecstatically. Compared with other music forms, Goth is more likely to have a profound and extensive influence. This influence is not limited to music, but can rise to the level of artistic concept and even value system.
Gothic music is often based on the excavated and enlarged human emotional world, and this spontaneous perceptual experience can be improved in the creative process. Therefore, when it acts on the audience again (borrowing the concept of journalism, referring to the receiving group), it will often lead to further aesthetic feelings and thinking space. If a kind of music causes not only artistic appreciation, but also philosophical reflection, even affects the change of personal belief and value system, and even questions the origin and ultimate meaning of life, then its control is beyond words.
It is for the above reasons that I came up with the idea of classifying Gothic music as a religion. Of course, I'm not saying that the core of Gothic music is to promote religion. In fact, it is no more religious than other music forms. At least most bands were not created to spread a certain religious belief, and even some extreme bands explicitly advocated anti-religion. The religion I am talking about here is not a concrete entity such as Christianity, Catholicism and Orthodox Church, but a broad concept.
Gothic font
A printed or handwritten font, very gorgeous.
Old English text
Gothic and Rococo are both highly decorative fonts. They pay more attention to lines, and the changes of patterns are also dotted with plants. You can learn about the British art movement at that time in 18- 19 century. Pay more attention to the thickness of font lines and the design of corners.
Goth exists.
Countless dark nights, the moonlight coldly surrounded everything. The sharp lines in the air seem to be exploring the deepest evil in the world. Life and death are closely linked, rendering darkness and despair. Goth was named after the German Goth tribe that invaded Italy and overthrew the Roman Empire. /kloc-in the 0 th and 5 th centuries, people generally had the idea of Renaissance and hoped to return to the classical era. The period between the classical era and the Renaissance is called the Middle Ages. Because Italy hated the Goths for destroying their Roman empire, people in the Renaissance always had a negative name for the Middle Ages. They called this period "Goth". It means barbarism and rudeness. Of course, we should see both sides of things. The Middle Ages left many precious cultural heritages and excellent works of art to the world. During this period, there was a breakthrough in architectural technology, and a Gothic cathedral like Notre Dame de PAME appeared. Gothic art is not only embodied in architecture. From the12nd century to the early16th century, sculptures, glass products and decorations were all labeled as Gothic art, and religion played a very important role in Gothic art works. Painters and sculptors use religious feelings more than realistic methods to express their themes. In any case, people in the Renaissance obviously implicitly denied the word "Goth".
Goth is not religion, politics, race or gender. Most Gothic bands are secular, even actively anti-religious bands. The visual signals of vampires, Catholicism, ancient Egypt and paganism are only transmitting the "dark power" to connect the feeling of Gothic music.
Goths have the same social tendency as other social groups of the same age. You will find that the greatest tendency among Goths is actually extreme indifference to politics, because almost all parties' views sound the same and useless.
Many people are dominated by a life without happiness and sense of accomplishment, which is unfortunate. But Goth turned this depressed feeling into a way of life, in other words: pain is my life choice-this is an art.
Goth may also be a kind of psychotherapy. If you talk to a white-collar worker who belongs to the mainstream society about your last attempted suicide, he may give you a different look and stay away from you. On sunny days, you may get cheap companions and never feel sorry for you. The scar on your wrist will be seriously respected. "You are so cool!" All people who feel out of place in society will find their place among the Goths, because everyone here is unique.
The post-Gothic era is a branch of punk split in the 1980s.
Later, it was combined with folk songs and industry respectively, and produced hard core, dead gold and black gold.
More mainstream Gothic bands include Cradle Dirt, nightwish, King and SOPORXX. ......
