Last year, there was a lawsuit between Samsung Electronics and Microsoft about Android patent fees. Samsung pointed out in a court document that Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's mobile phone business violated the patent cooperation agreement of that year, and Microsoft forced Samsung to take the initiative to stop some cooperation.
This lawsuit was initiated by Microsoft in early 20 14. Microsoft alleged that in the Android patent licensing agreement signed by the two parties before, Samsung delayed paying the patent fee of $654.38 billion, so it still owed interest of $6.9 million.
In the court documents submitted last year, Samsung said that according to the patent cooperation agreement of 20 1 1, Samsung will pay Microsoft more than one billion dollars for the patent of Android system, Samsung will develop and sell mobile phones based on WindowsPhone operating system, and Samsung will also share some trade secret information with Microsoft.
According to the agreement between the two parties, if the market share of Samsung WP mobile phone reaches a certain standard, Microsoft will exempt Samsung from certain Android patent fees.
An executive of Samsung Electronics pointed out:
"Samsung has run a stable solution on Windows and WindowsPhone, and Samsung is also interested in promoting the development of the WindowsPhone market. If the lawsuit is resolved, Samsung will launch a new WindowsPhone as soon as the third quarter of this year. "
Obviously, this move can help Samsung reduce its dependence on Android, make up for the relative failure of TizenOS, and attract more developers' support.
The official then added:
"Samsung will work hard to promote the development of Tizen system this year, but the main focus is on TV sets, not mobile devices.
Microsoft knows that Samsung has indisputable advantages in marketing, which is very helpful to promote the development of WindowsPhone, so we are trying to find similarities. "
The report pointed out that Microsoft has cooperated with Samsung in medical care and cloud computing.
Last year, Samsung spent $965.438 million on patent fees. After Microsoft took Samsung to court, the latter refused to pay the patent fee.
