Over the past 50 years, with the correct leadership and caring support of the Party committee and government of the autonomous region, and through the joint efforts of several generations of scientific and technical personnel, the Institute has developed into one of the provincial-level Academy of Agricultural Sciences with certain strength and advantages in animal and plant breeding, pest control, cultivation, soil improvement and desertification control, mutton sheep improvement, biotechnology, nuclear radiation, agricultural product quality supervision and testing, and Lycium barbarum research and development. He presided over the completion of 52 scientific research achievements1item, including 384 award-winning achievements, 4 national awards1item and 3 provincial and ministerial awards1item. Patents 10 were applied for and obtained, new varieties 100 were approved, and national and autonomous regional standards 10 were formulated. There are three wheat varieties that have been updated four times in the whole region, and five rice varieties that have been updated six times are selected by our institute. In 2004, the fifth maize variety in this area was updated. The popularization and application of a number of advanced and practical supporting technologies, such as new varieties of wheat and rice, corn interplanting with wheat, dry cultivation of rice and winter wheat moving northward, have played an important role in the continuous improvement of grain yield and quality in our region. The new variety "Ningqi 1 2" and standardized cultivation techniques have been popularized in our region and surrounding provinces, accounting for more than 90% of the planting area, which has significantly improved the output and economic benefits of Lycium barbarum and effectively promoted the development of Lycium barbarum industry. The introduction of famous, special, excellent and new vegetable varieties, the promotion of vegetable factory production technology and facility cultivation technology have promoted the development of vegetables in the suburbs of our region. More than 30 scientific research projects focusing on ecological restoration and aiming at cultivating local characteristic industries, such as comprehensive management of small watersheds in southern Ningxia, transformation of middle and low yield fields in northern Yin Bei and sand control in arid areas in central China, have been completed, which have provided technical support for ecological environment control in our region, especially the popularization and application area of sand control technology has reached more than 5 million mu, and achieved remarkable social, ecological and economic benefits.
In order to actively respond to the call of scientific and technological system reform and accelerate the transformation of scientific and technological productivity, Lycium barbarum Research Institute (Limited) of Ningxia Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences was established in August 2002.
