Over the years, we have traveled all over the desert in northern China, set up a large number of field observation points in desert areas, and made long-term field observation on the movement law of sandstorms. After studying in the United States for two years, Dong Zhibao returned to China as scheduled and was selected into the "Hundred Talents Program" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He applied advanced foreign theories and technologies to the study of aeolian physics in China, made outstanding contributions to the basic theory, experimental technology and personnel training of aeolian physics, and significantly improved the international status of aeolian physics research in China.
Great achievements have been made in the theoretical research of aeolian physics, especially in the fields of soil wind erosion, aeolian flow, aeolian geomorphology dynamics, aeolian feedback mechanism and so on. SCHUM's theory of running water erosion is extended to the field of soil wind erosion research, and the soil wind erosion equation suitable for arid and semi-arid areas in northern China is established. According to the wind erosion climate index and the surface erodibility index, the drought degree in China is determined.
The spatial distribution of wind erosion intensity in arid areas reveals the spatial pattern of potential danger of land desertification in China from a macro perspective. Through a large number of experiments, it is found that R. A. Bagnold, the founder of aeolian physics, revised the "Law of Aerodynamic Roughness of Sand Bed 1/30" after more than ten wind tunnel simulation experiments in order to obtain sufficient evidence. By using modern laser technology and a large number of simulation experiments, the velocity profile equation and general equation of wind-blown sand flow structure are established, and the resistance of wind-blown sand flow to airflow is measured for the first time. It is pointed out that the wind-blown sand flow is a special gas-solid two-phase flow with dispersed phase resistance that can not be ignored, and the calculation method of aerodynamic roughness of moving sand bed under different wind-blown sand activity intensity is put forward. On the basis of long-term observation of desert, the academic idea of reverse evolution of sand dune landform under the condition of insufficient supply of sand source is put forward. Taking the initiative to carry out interdisciplinary research, combining traditional aeolian physics with atmospheric boundary layer science, clearly putting forward the concept and importance of aeolian boundary layer in academic circles, and concentrating on carrying out experiments and field observation research have not only become an important feature of aeolian physics research in China, but also been accepted and imitated by more and more foreign counterparts. Many important research achievements have been published in academic journals at home and abroad, which have had a positive impact in academic circles. Published more than 20 papers 120, including more than 40 journal papers included in SCI.
Researcher Dong Zhibao realized that the innovation of research means is an important guarantee for scientific research innovation. In view of the harsh experimental and field observation conditions in desert research, many conventional instruments can not function normally, and there is a lack of special instruments and equipment for desert research at home and abroad. Many institutions have independently developed instruments and equipment to improve the experimental conditions. They successively presided over and participated in the research and development of more than 10 sets of special instruments for desert research, and 10 sets obtained national patents, which obviously improved the experimental conditions. The self-developed wind speed profile acquisition system for sand prevention has not only obtained a lot of reliable experimental data, but also been adopted by domestic and foreign counterparts.
Researcher Dong Zhibao has won many scientific and technological awards and honorary titles. As the main participant, "Tarim Desert Petroleum Highway Engineering Technology Research" was rated as one of the top ten national science and technology news in 1995, and won the first prize of national science and technology progress and the special prize of China Petroleum and Natural Gas Corporation. 1998 was selected into the "Hundred Talents Program" of Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2002, he was supported by the National Outstanding Youth Fund and won the first batch of "Hundred Talents Program" of China Academy of Sciences. He was also awarded a post expert in Gansu Province and an advanced individual in the Institute of Environment and Engineering in Cold and Arid Regions of Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2003, he was awarded by China Institute of Sand Control and Sand Industry as an outstanding party member of Lanzhou Branch of China Academy of Sciences and an advanced scientific and technological worker of sand control and sand industry in China. In 2004, it was selected by seven ministries and commissions, including the Ministry of Personnel, as the first batch of national-level candidates for the 100 million talents project in the new century. In 2005, it won the special government allowance of the State Council, the Eighth National Geographic Science and Technology Award and the second prize of Gansu Scientific and Technological Progress Award. Won the 9th China Youth Science and Technology Award in 2006.
