What's China's plan for the human genome?

The genomics theory, strategy and technology established during the development of "Human Genome Project" focus on the whole genome concept of a biological species, which can and has been used to study all biological genomes, opening a new era of life science based on DNA sequences. The technical platform established by the "Human Genome Project" provides a reliable and fast means for finding important biological resources and finding and cloning resource genes. Therefore, large-scale genome sequencing technology and the resource genes it provides naturally become the "upstream" and "source" of the biological industry. Therefore, people in the industry say that a country's human genome center must of course do genome sequencing.

Finally, the Human Genome Center of Institute of Genetics, China Academy of Sciences (Beijing Center for short) was opened on June 65438+August 65438+August 0998. 1in February, 1999, it was decided to conduct large-scale genome sequencing and pre-run in April, creating conditions for joining the "International Sequencing Club". On July 7th, he registered with the International Human Genome Sequencing Collaboration Group and applied to join the International Sequencing Club.

1 September, 9991day, the 5th human genome sequencing strategy conference was held in London. As a new member, Beijing Center has discussed strategies, negotiated standards, defined regions, analyzed problems and shared joys and sorrows with 15 centers that have made outstanding contributions to the human genome. China, who accounts for 20% of the world's population, is responsible for determining the human genome sequence of 1%.

"International Sequencing Club" listened to the statistics of laboratory area, design planning, equipment types and actual operation in Beijing Center. Personnel composition and quality introduction, technical training and practical operation, detailed budget based on all data such as equipment, reagents and actual input and output of personnel. The Beijing Center confidently announced that it would guarantee the financial support of China Academy of Sciences and its Institute of Genetics, the central government of China and other relevant departments, local governments and the people of China, and the funds would be in place in full and on time.

It was not built in a day. The operation of key equipment in Beijing Center keeps pace with international counterparts, which convincingly shows that the center staff have mastered all the technical keys and details, as well as the management and operation of the world-class center. Beijing Center proudly displayed the most difficult, expensive, unexpected and accurate part, and submitted four copies of 628Kb data. These data make China one of the six countries that have submitted the most human DNA sequence data. Beijing Center is full of confidence in synchronizing with its international counterparts, that is, the "lump sum" regional sequencing that was not completed in the spring of 2000 ensures that more than half of the sequences meet the quality standards of the "final atlas".

Finally, Beijing Center stated: On the basis of studying the documents of the previous four "strategy" meetings, it promised to abide by the spirit of HGP, especially the principle of immediately publishing and sharing relevant data for free. Beijing Center also reiterated its opposition to patents on basic information of human genome, and promised not to keep any data and not to apply for similar patents.

Due to the late registration of China, the fifth strategic conference on human genome sequencing was originally scheduled to be held without the participation of representatives from China. In order to ensure the timely attendance of the representative of China, several international consultants from the Beijing Center contacted around and made suggestions. Thanks to the efforts of all parties, the principals of the 5th Human Genome Sequencing Strategy Conference finally decided to invite representatives from China to attend the conference by overseas telephone, and representatives from all countries expressed their congratulations. Several delegates at the meeting praised China's progress with their old acquaintance or witnessed facts.
