First, all 5G mobile phones should be charged. Huawei's patent fee this time is very wide, and 5G mobile phones have to be collected. This means that all domestic Xiaomi mobile phones, OPPO mobile phones, HONOR mobile phones and vivo mobile phones will be charged except Apple mobile phones and Samsung mobile phones using Huawei's 5G technology. Huawei has more than 3,000 5G patented technologies. Although not all of them are basic patents, if all of them are really charged, the cost will be considerable.
After all, Huawei's mobile phone shipments reached 200 million in 20 19, and Samsung's shipments were even higher than Huawei's, so other mobile phone brands shipped at least tens of millions or hundreds of millions each year. If each one really needs to be charged, it can create high revenue for Huawei, which is what you earn at home. Just like Qualcomm, you can make a lot of money from patent fees.
Second, the maximum charge for each mobile phone is $2.50. Although Huawei charges a fee for each 5G mobile phone, Huawei still has its own bottom line, and will not charge a fee like Qualcomm. The patent fees charged by Qualcomm are ridiculously high. At the end of last year, Huawei also paid a settlement of US$ 6,543.8+US$ 800 million to Qualcomm, which also involved patents. Although Huawei charges now, the fees are still relatively low. The patent fee for a mobile phone will not exceed US$ 2.50, which is only about 15 yuan when converted into RMB.
Even if a company's annual mobile phone shipment reaches 200 million units, if it is simply calculated, it only needs to pay Huawei a patent fee of 3 billion yuan. Compared with Huawei's $6,543.8 +0.8 billion for Qualcomm, it is still a far cry. Moreover, it is impossible for Huawei to calculate according to such expenses. Although Huawei has a lot of patent fees, other companies also have them.
Therefore, when negotiating with companies such as Samsung and Qualcomm, Huawei is likely to reach an agreement on patent exchange, that is, exchange patented technologies with each other without paying or paying less, so as to ensure a win-win situation. Therefore, although Huawei can increase its revenue by charging 5G patent fees, it is difficult for it to rely on patent fees to make money like Qualcomm. Qualcomm's annual patent fee income almost reaches 50% of Qualcomm's total annual revenue, which is quite amazing, but Huawei certainly can't reach this level.
