When Geely first acquired Volvo, it was true that it could not directly use Volvo’s technology.
However, through technology transfer, joint research and development, etc., Geely has now achieved full technology sharing with Volvo. In human terms, it is a relationship of "left hand over right hand".
It is the "Geely Group" that owns Volvo technology
Geely Group acquired Volvo, but it cannot use it directly
First of all, it must be clear that the person who acquired Volvo is the Geely Group , instead of "Geely Automobile",
It acquired 100% of Volvo Car Company's equity through the acquisition of Geely Group, and also owned 10,963 patents and special intellectual property rights.
However, Geely cannot directly use these more than 10,000 patents on its own cars. It only has the right to use key technologies and intellectual property rights related to Volvo.
Geely cannot use the patents that Ford participated in the joint research and development of ***
The reason why there are the words "related to Volvo" is because Volvo's predecessor is "Ford". Geely cannot use those patents that belong to "limited authorization".
For example, the 6-cylinder engine of the SI6, which once won the "Ward Top Ten Engines", was jointly developed by Volvo and Ford at the time. Part of the technology belonged to Ford. If Volvo needed , you can continue to use it, but Geely cannot.
In fact, it is easy to understand, just like I lend my car to a friend. If my friend lends my car to other friends, then I will definitely not be happy. If he said that he sold the car I borrowed to someone else, that would be even more nonsense, right?
Through technology transfer, Geely Automobile has acquired some technologies
As we all know, the purpose of Geely Group's acquisition of Volvo Cars is to absorb technology and at the same time enhance the brand image of its own "Geely Automobile" . If I can’t use it, why should I buy it? Right?
It’s like buying tutorial books when I was studying, just to refer to the problem-solving ideas in them. However, if the teacher says that this kind of problem-solving method cannot be used during the exam, why should I buy this tutorial book, right? Money spent in vain.
So, what does Geely do? Its approach is to use technology transfer first to use what can be used.
Zhejiang University has a master's thesis, "Research on Technology Synergy Effects of Cross-Border Mergers and Acquisitions—A Case Study Based on Geely's Acquisition of Volvo."
In March 2013, Geely and Volvo reached a technology transfer. In August of the same year, Volvo transferred three technologies to Geely, including the GMC upgraded platform, which is what we call mid-size cars.
Then, the in-car air quality control system and GX7 safety innovation technology were immediately used by Geely.
Geely's B-class sedan Borui is produced based on the KC platform extended by GMC.
The safety configurations of Geely Borui such as urban pre-collision, adaptive cruise, and semi-automatic parking are all directly borrowed from Volvo.
In addition, the appearance of Borui is a chassis system designed by Peter Horbury, the former vice president of Volvo Group, and optimized by Lean Nova, Volvo’s official chassis tuning supplier.
