LNG carrier manufacturing

Under the favorable market situation, Korean shipbuilding enterprises began to "cluster" in the field of LNG ship construction. On the basis of only three companies, namely Hyundai Heavy Industry, Samsung Heavy Industry and Daewoo Shipbuilding Ocean, Hanjin Heavy Industry, STX Shipbuilding, Hyundai Sanhu Heavy Industry and newly established Chengdong Shipbuilding, participated in the LNG ship construction market, further pushing the market competition to a fever pitch. In recent years (up to 20 13), Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding Ocean have taken orders for almost all large LNG ships in the international LNG ship market, especially the super-large LNG ships with a capacity of more than 200,000 cubic meters are all taken over by Samsung and Daewoo, and the above three shipping companies account for more than 80% of the international LNG ship market. In order to further improve its competitiveness, Hyundai Heavy Industry began to develop and innovate LNG carriers on the flat ground on the basis of successfully building cruise ships and LPG carriers. It is estimated that the production and construction capacity of LNG ships will reach 14 ships. Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding Ocean are also expanding the capacity of LNG carriers, which will reach 15 and 13 respectively.

1995-2000, Hanjin Heavy Industry built four LNG carriers for Korean LNG importers. However, after 2000, Hanjin Heavy Industry shifted its focus to the field of large container ships and stopped the construction and order taking of LNG ships. Han Jin later returned to the LNG ship construction market. STX Shipbuilding Company's development goal is to surpass the modern Sanhu Heavy Industry and become a global shipbuilding company, so LNG is also listed as one of the key shipbuilding types with high added value. In 2005, STX Shipbuilding established a cooperative relationship with GTT Company of France, and GTT Company provided the design and development technology of LNG carriers. In April this year, STX Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. cooperated with West African enterprises and took orders for four LNG ships, each with an average price of 250 million US dollars. STX Shipbuilding Company said that it will further strengthen its offensive against LNG sea waybills in the international shipping market in the future.

Sanhu Heavy Industry once built cruise ships and chemical product carriers (PC), and with the support of modern heavy industry, it also began to set foot in the construction of LNG ships. At present, the production and construction capacity of LNG carriers is three. The first LNG ship built in the first quarter of this year has officially started construction.

Chengdong shipbuilding is developed by small shipyards, and its main business is to produce hull segmented structures for large shipbuilding enterprises. In the past two years, it has developed rapidly through mergers and acquisitions and the support of local governments. We have also established a cooperative relationship with French GTT company, absorbed the technology of GTT LNG ship, and will participate in the competition of LNG ship market in the next step.

At present, South Korea is the country with the strongest LNG ship construction equipment and actual construction capacity in the world, but the core technology of its LNG ship comes from GTT company in France, so every time an LNG ship is built, the Korean shipyard will pay GTT company a patent fee of about 6.5438 million US dollars. Therefore, the Korean government and shipping companies are determined to work together to break through the technical difficulties and develop the key technologies of LNG carriers belonging to South Korea.
