Can periodontitis be cured?

Whether periodontal disease can be completely cured depends mainly on the severity of the disease.

In the early stage of periodontal disease or gingivitis, inflammation only invades gingival tissue and does not damage periodontal tissue, which is basically curable. As long as the local irritants are removed by tooth washing, the inflammation will disappear and the gums will return to health.

When periodontal disease develops into periodontitis, inflammation destroys periodontal supporting tissues, leading to gingival atrophy and alveolar bone absorption. Once this damage happens, it is irreversible, so the possibility of cure is relatively small. Treatment can only be to control the disease and maintain the status quo, that is, to try to prevent the deterioration of periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease itself has a high recurrence rate and is difficult to cure. Using laser as periodontal adjuvant therapy can effectively reduce recurrence. The cutting function of laser can remove the inflammatory epithelium in gingival pocket and periodontal pocket, sterilize, diminish inflammation and stop bleeding. Compared with traditional surgery, laser has the advantages of good tolerance, no anesthesia, less bleeding and quick recovery. Laser can be used as an alternative treatment for some periodontal surgery, and can also be used as an auxiliary measure after basic periodontal treatment. For example, subgingival curettage combined with laser disinfection of periodontal pocket, after curettage, laser is used to eliminate residual bacterial inflammation in periodontal pocket, which is cleaner and more effective and can reduce the recurrence of periodontal disease.
