How long is the patent protection period in Russia?

Article 3 of the Patent Law of the Russian Federation stipulates that:

The term of the invention patent right expires in 20 years from the date of submitting the application to the Federal Intellectual Property Enforcement Bureau.

The validity period of the invention patent right of drugs, pesticides or agrochemicals that need to be allowed to be used according to legal procedures may be extended by the Federal Intellectual Property Office at the request of the patentee, and deducted for five years from the date of submitting the invention application to the date of first allowing the use. In this case, the extension of the validity of the invention patent shall not exceed 5 years. The above request shall be made within the validity period of the patent right and before the expiration of 6 months from the date of approval or the date of patent grant (whichever is later).

The term of the patent right for utility model shall expire after five years from the date of submitting the application to the Federal Intellectual Property Enforcement Bureau. The validity period of the patent right for utility model may be extended by the Federal Intellectual Property Enforcement Bureau at the request of the patentee, but it shall not exceed 3 years.

The term of design patent right expires in 10 year from the date of submitting the application to the Federal Intellectual Property Enforcement Bureau. The term of validity of the patent right for design may be extended by the Federal Intellectual Property Office at the request of the patentee, but it shall not exceed 5 years.

Simply put:

It has been invented for 20 years, and medicines and the like can be extended for 5 years.

The utility model is 5 years, which can be extended for 3 years.

The design is 10 year, which can be extended for 5 years.

The time limit starts from the application date.
