Patent cooperation between BYD and Honda

Large Japanese manufacturers such as Toyota and Honda are in contact with the United States and China to develop electric vehicles. Different from leading the development of hybrid electric vehicles in the past and proving their existence with their own patents, Japanese manufacturers are only latecomers in the pure electric vehicle market. Without cooperation, Japanese manufacturers are likely to be left behind.

On April 6th, local time, after the news that GM and Honda are developing electric vehicles came out, BYD and Toyota of China announced the establishment of an electric vehicle development joint venture company.

BTET (BYD Toyota Electric Vehicle Technology Co., Ltd.), a joint venture between China automobile manufacturer BYD and Toyota, will start operation in May. The main goal of this joint venture is to launch electric SUVs and cars for China consumers.

The joint venture established by the two companies includes all the elements needed to develop electric vehicles, such as batteries, electric vehicle platforms and power transmission systems, and is expected to be launched under the Toyota brand in 2025.

Toyota believes that this joint venture is a good opportunity to gain expertise in batteries, powertrains and platforms needed to develop electric vehicles in a short time. Toyota, which has been engaged in the development of hybrid vehicles for decades, plans to cooperate with BYD, the world's largest supplier of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles, to maintain its leading position in the electric vehicle market.

At the same time, GM and Honda jointly developed electric vehicles. GM shared the next-generation platform BEV3 released last month. Ultium battery technology, Honda is responsible for internal and external design and driving characteristics.

The joint development of the two companies is expected to start in 2023 at the earliest. Honda plans to make up for its shortcomings in the development of hybrid and electric vehicles through joint development with General Motors.

As the two major Japanese automakers keep pace with manufacturers in China and the United States, the analysis shows that the seemingly silent national war has begun to determine who is the dominant position in the electric vehicle market, and electric vehicles are destined to surpass fuel vehicles and become the mainstream of the future automobile market.
