Welcome to the car park.
Today we are going to talk about sports cars, pure, two-door sports cars. For a long time, sports cars have been bound to luxury brands, high performance, and high-profile... These elements are destined to never be cheap. Currently on the market, the cheapest Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ, which cost more than 300,000 yuan, can only be regarded as "bad sports cars." If you want to truly satisfy the luxury brand, high performance, and high profile, you must at least get the Porsche 718, which costs hundreds of thousands more... …
Many people pin their sports car dreams on electric vehicles, because it is relatively easy for electric vehicles to achieve high performance. In other words, the price may come down. However, foreign brands have no enthusiasm for electric sports cars, and they will not lower the price just because electric motors save money than engines. Until a domestic electric sports car appeared, the Leapmoon S01. Although it had nothing to do with the brand, performance, and tonality, at least it made a sports car shell.
Later, the small sports car SC-01 also came out. It is known as the first sports car for young people. It has dual motors and four-wheel drive, and can reach 100km/h in 4 seconds. But Fangfeng sells for close to 300,000, which is still expensive for ordinary people.
Now, it’s our turn for today’s protagonist, the MG Cyberster, a two-door electric sports car. Brand is a disadvantage, but what if we give you an impeccable price? The current MG can be seen from the MG7, what it does is flip the table...
Cyberster design?
In one sentence, Cyberster should be the car most like MG, because before MG was sold to China, the entire brand was closely related to sports, and they especially like to make small sports cars that are people-friendly. Therefore, Queen Elizabeth of England was once a loyal MG owner.
However, since selling out, MG not only produced small sports cars like TF when it was affiliated with Nanjing Automobile, but TF is a pure British sports car left over from before MG sold out. Later, after joining SAIC, it was completely They make a purely domestic family car with a sports coat, but with the current Cyperster, they have found a bit of the feeling of the past, and they want to sell this car back to the UK.
Cyberster concept car
Especially the concept car previously unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show, with its extremely low and wide body, oversized wheels, ultra-thin tires, two-door and two-door Seats, scissor doors, convertible...every part is in my aesthetic point.
Rendering of the production version
But the concept car cannot be used as a reference. Now that the production version has been exposed, it does not feel as arrogant as the previous concept car. But the core two-door, two-seater, scissor doors, and soft-top convertibles are retained. The overall feel is a bit like Mazda MX-5, but the design is more radical.
The interior has also been exposed. It is called the "pure electric supercar e-sports cockpit" and has a cool name. There are two key points: first, the dual-screen half-width steering wheel. I personally have reservations about the half-width steering wheel, and I still hope that the option of a regular steering wheel can be provided. Second, the interior layout is very aggressive, and the overall layout is obviously biased towards the driver's seat, with the driver's seat wrapped around it, and the push-button gear shifting has the feel of a British car.
Currently, more information has not been exposed. Originally, the concept car had L3 level autonomous driving, but regulations did not allow it. It is estimated that the production version will have at least L2 level.
Cyberster’s performance?
The electric era has given domestic manufacturers a shortcut to try high-performance models. In the early years, a fuel sports car like the Geely Beauty Leopard had a sports car shell, but the contents inside were limited by the technology at the time, so it only dared to sell for tens of thousands of yuan. But now at least technically, we have the foundation to build a sports car. Even if others use engines, we use electric motors.
The clearest picture of the actual car so far
Previously on the concept car, it was a dual-motor four-wheel drive, with 0-100km/h in 3 seconds and a range of 800 kilometers. Don’t take this data seriously. The concept car is only responsible for one concept, and the rest is all realized through PPT.
The mass-produced version has been determined and will be divided into single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor four-wheel drive. My personal guess is that the single-motor rear-wheel drive can break 100 mph in more than 6 seconds, and the dual-motor four-wheel drive can break 100 mph in about 4 seconds. The range can be 4-500 kilometers. That's it.
Previously leaked patent images
Of course, power is only part of the performance. A sports car is not the type that can be easily overpowered. Chassis and control are even more important. So regardless of whether the 86 or BRZ can't outrun a 2.0T family car in a straight line, they can take off as long as there are curves. This is a challenge for MG. Over the years, it has lost all its sports car technology, and the current MG is no longer the same as the MG of the past. In essence, it is a domestic manufacturer backed by SAIC, and even SAIC does not even manufacture it. Sports car experience.
The scissor door is undoubtedly
At the same time, due to the weight of the battery pack, electric vehicles are very conducive to a low center of gravity, which is an advantage. But on the other hand, placing an overweight battery on a sports car is a debuff for lightweighting. It depends on how MG balances it. After all, a sports car is not a coupe. It relies heavily on lightweighting, which directly affects the chassis and handling.
There are two technologies on the concept car that may be implemented in the production version. The first is CTP technology, that is, module-less batteries. This technology was developed in the CATL era, and SAIC also has a CTP production line. The so-called module-free battery requires many processes and packaging. Reducing these processes and packaging means that there are fewer public stalls in your home, and the housing acquisition rate is also improved. For a battery pack of the same size, the unit volume utilization rate Higher, the energy density is higher.
The other is a new 8-layer Hair-pin motor developed by SAIC. "Hair-pin" means hairpin. This is a technology that reduces the heat and energy loss of the motor. The motor of the Porsche Taycan is this type of technology, which has improved power and energy consumption compared to conventional permanent magnet synchronous motors.
How much might it sell for?
I remember that at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show, some media asked MG staff how much this car would probably sell for. The answer they gave at that time was about 200,000.
Of course, it is not ruled out that MG wants to make trouble here. For the entry-level single-motor rear drive, it only needs to reduce the motor power, reduce the battery capacity, and reduce the gimmick configuration (large-size rim tires, multi-piston calipers, leather interior decoration, assisted driving...), it can be given a starting price of less than 200,000, such as 199,800 or even 189,800. Then, the dual-motor four-wheel drive price is set at around 250,000, which I think is more reasonable.
My personal guess is that the final price range of this car should be around 200,000-250,000. lt;p class="q
