Southwestern University Rongchang Campus, formerly known as Jianhua Senior Agricultural Vocational School founded in 1938, was the location of the Central Animal Husbandry Experimental Institute, Agricultural Experimental Institute and Serum Research Institute of the National Government during the Anti-Japanese War. After liberation, it became a famous national Sichuan Rongchang Animal Husbandry and Veterinary School was approved by the State Council in 1978 and was upgraded to Sichuan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College. In 2001, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it merged with the former Southwest Agricultural University and the Citrus Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences to form a new Southwest Agricultural University and established the Rongchang campus. In July 2005, Southwest Agricultural University and Southwest Normal University merged to form Southwest University, and the campus was renamed Southwest University Rongchang Campus.
